Hi...
I've been a type 1 diabetic since the age of 12... Im 25 in two months and still struggling!
I went through the rebellious teen years trying to ignore it, pretend i was fine but now i guess i have to face the facts that it's something ive gotta live with!

I've started seeing doctors and diabetic nurses again, trying ever so hard to test my bloods twice a day (which is such a pain in the ass!). Joined Diabetes.co.uk  lol .I find my biggest problem is im so un organised, i work different jobs so getting up and eating/injecting at the same time everyday is a struggle!

My aim this year tho, is to get to grips with my diabetes and keep it under control. NO MORE EXCUSES!!!

I also need big help with travelling! I intend to backpack around the world (south east asia/oz/nz/canada) for 6 months in october and everyone i speak to has a different idea (or non at all!) about dealing with insulin.
I really don't think its advisable to take 6months worth of supply backpacking! for starters it'll ruin and

I also dont think ill be able to fit anything else in my bag... Can you buy insulin abroad? Is it expensive? I hear they have different strengths of insulin as well.... How do you work out what units to take? I'm so confused :?

Hello Pascale,
You seem to have been overlooked. :(
I am sure someone will come along and help you out. I am a Type 2 and so your questions are not relevant to me.
Would say, welcome to the forum.

Catherine.

Thanks Catherine.

I have moved this from Greetings and Introductions to the Type 1 area in the hope that an experienced T1 can provide an answer.

Hi Pascale,

Wow - that's a busy schedule and a lot of questions. I have relevant experience in one tiny bit of it, so will talk about that. I have just returned home from Canada and ran out of insulin due to it leaking out of my pen. It disappeared at half a cartridge at a time due to low temperature and high altitude. Result?... I was in the pharmacy buying replacements. In Canada, the Novorapid penfill is called the same as it is here and comes in the 3ml, 100 units per ml cartridges. A box of 5 set me back 60 Canadian dollars, which is about £40.

To prepare for purchasing in foreign countries (if that's what you're going to do) I suggest you search online first way before you go. Even though mine was an emergency, it wasn't too bad. I simply googled 'Novorapid insulin canada' and found what they called it, prices, etc. Then I just went to the local pharmacy and bought it. If you take in several countries, make sure you know all the variations on the brand and strength. Make sure you take your repeat prescritption with you for reference.

When I have more time (have to get on the road in a minute) i can chat about the other questions. PM me if you like.

Speak later,
Sam.
