Hi there, my husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 5 years ago. He lost 2 and a half stone and in many ways has never felt fitter which is great. However, just after his diagnosis, the diabetes nurse at our surgery had a car accident and went off sick and was never replaced. Over the last two years in particular, he has been sent fairly random requests for wee samples (never a clear indication of what they’re for or if they should be first morning urine etc) as well as other medication reviews. He was told his cholesterol was high so was put on a statin, which we then found out was messing up his sugars. Eventually he got someone to tell him what his cholesterol was and it was 5.5. He tried to ask if there was a connection with statins and sugars but never really got an answer. Just told to keep taking it. Then, a few months ago he was told to bring in a first morning urine sample which he did. It was rejected and he was told it “must be first morning urine”, which it was. This happened three times more until he gave up. He did keep telling them.
Now, don’t get me wrong, the NHS is at breaking point and we are not moaning I promise.
But my question is:
Is there a private facility somewhere where we can go and basically get a fresh look at it all? Check his sugars, his bloods, his cholesterol, everything? And then get some good advice moving forwards?
Has anyone heard of this or got any recommendations please?
Thanks you

Not sure about that but personally, I'd use the app if you have one to contact doctor and get your husband to lay it all out just like you have here. I find it a useful way to say everything you want without feeling like you're using your your appt time!
Also, with or without a diabetic nurse, your husband should have an annual diabetic health check, feet, weight, hba1c. Booking one if it's overdue would be a start perhaps?

Thank you for replying, much appreciated

Yes he had his annual check in January, I’ve just realised that was what prompted the endless wee samples, as his sugars/cholesterol were slightly up.
But that’s a really good suggestion. We do have the app service so I think that’s a good start

Does your husband monitor his own blood sugars? Because if he would, he'd know what was going on... Which would be some reassurance, at least where the blood sugars are concerned?
