why can't everyone get on........
Hi All

a quick how I am where I am.................

had a template biopsy on my prostate Friday morning at 9am

my bloods unexplainedly went from 5.4 pre bed Thursday night to 21.2 at 5:30am when I awoke to get ready to go to hospital
9u pen injections plus 7.45u on a new changed pod ( 5:45am ) and managed to get bloods to 11.2 at time of procedure.

post op at 10:30 measured at 8.4 and was 5.6 pre lunch at 1:30pm when we got home from hospital.
as I was starving had 1.5 sandwiches (54 carb) bolus 13.15u ( 1 to 4 I:C) but 3:30pm bloods back up at 15.6
so another 6u pen inject plus 3.05 pump bolus to get me back down to 6.7 by 6:30pm

this pattern repeated Friday night with a bed time of 5.4 ( 11:00 pm , 4 hours post eating an bolus) and by 1:30am was up at 15.6

the same happened yesterday after eating breakfast -- struggled to get bloods down all day
finally did by tea time and the pattern repeated again last night

so I was up a lot of the night testing every hour and correcting

bloods have sort of steadily risen all morning after a small breakfast at 7am
( 11 carbs -- 2 cream crackers -- to take antibiotic with )
at 11am was 7.5 ( PDM bolus of .8 ) just now 9.0

am I losing the plot -- is my body in anti attack mode from the invasive procedure ??
I don't have a cold -- but my body seems to be acting as though I have an infection
just looking for some reassurance -- I am seriously doubting my abilities ?

I have a call in with the GP out of hours -- awaiting a call back
( don't think it will be any help though if I'm honest )

Hi @himtoo. I'm sure that you are still in control of everything although numbers are suggesting otherwise.
Firstly.... the op sounds very invasive and I'm sure if it was me I would have been stressed Thursday, Friday and maybe in shock Saturday. It's now Sunday. A lot has happened in the last 48 hrs.
My bs can mess me about like yours have for no reason whatsoever. Then as if by magic everything goes back to normal.
As we both know worry on top of stress= chaos for control.
I understand your concerns and me saying not to worry is easier said than done. If everything is still crazy in another 24/48 hrs then yes investigate more.
The diabetes has spotted a chink in the armour and is trying it's luck.
Hope you get back to normal asap.

you say your on anitbiotics? do you have an infection or is it to stop you getting one from the operation?

It sounds really bland and deeply unhelpful, but it really is probably just stress. Not only mentally and emotionally stressed, but physically stressed too: your waiting for biopsy results, you had an invasive procedure, your body is trying to heal. Everyone would struggle to control blood sugar in those circumstances. You're not losing the plot, and it's nothing to do with your abilities.

Your body probably thinks it does have an infection - that's what you have been put in prophylactic antibiotics for, surely? If you have any suspicion that you might actually have an infection after the biopsy, any temperature, sickness, pain or if you think the high blood sugar is a sign of occult infection, get checked out by a doctor straight away.

hi @Gaz-M
thanks for replying !!
the antibiotics are the standard issue following this procedure Ciprofloxacin 500mg twice a day for 5 days.

Have you ruled out an insulin problem by changing vial?
Stress certainly wont help.
Clocks have changed and loads of peeps have a sudden need for extra basal and bolus at this time of year.

The antibiotics you are on do the side effects mention a blood sugar increase?

I personally would put it down to, Stress and the Antbiotics, i dare say some antibiotics may affect BG more than others.
Maybe even the local anaesthetic you had has caused your bg to climb.

I hope they gave you plenty of antibiotics as when i had this procedure i ended up with an infection 2 weeks later which resulted in an overnight admission. I'm waiting for another biopsy on the Prostate undr GA myself.

Hope you're BG settles down asap

Regards

Martin

Sorry to hear your Bg levels are being naughty HT, sounds like stress to me, has quite an impact on my Bg levels, you've been through a lot so try and take it easy :)

thanks for the replies......... today has been a day of bloods ranging between 9-12 all day ( had scrambled eggs for lunch )
loads of extra bolus on the pdm
they finally dipped to 7.9 pre meal 6:15pm ( lamb stew with no potato -- just carrot , swede , onion , leek. )( 26 carb )
bolused at a 1:2 IC instead of normal 1:4
and now 3 hours post meal still sitting at 8.1 so happy with that

have set a new basal program at +6% on every hourly basal rate ( +1.45u over the day )

have also run some TBR's this afternoon for a couple of hours

more alarms and testing tonight ..............

Oh @himtoo - sorry it's been such a tricky time - really glad to hear things have steadied up a bit!

Don't ever doubt your abilities - it's just a curveball you weren't expecting. I have no advice to offer on top of what's been offered already - other than to stay calm and keep testing.

Very, very best.

:)

It sounds like stress to me too, exacerbated by the disturbed night, change of routine and possibly the actual procedure.

Sorry the b@£*#€* diabetes is playing up and adding to your anxieties. It's incredibly annoying when you have other things to deal with. All I can suggest is what you're doing - actively controlling your BS by temp basals and corrections.

Hopefully it'll gradually come back down and give you some peace. X

LOL -- at least temporarily the himtoo machine feels back in control
went to bed last night on a 4.9 ( 5 hours post meal bolus )
set alarm for 1am tested at 5.7 ( 0.2u correction )
set alarm for 3:30am tested 6.7 ( 0.8u correction)
woke up 7am tested a 3.4 ---- Yay !!!!!!! love to see I might have cracked the cycle

haven't felt so out of control ( fri am to sun afternoon ) in many many years -- very scary

so a huge thanks to all my lovely D friends on the forum for your support

Hi @himtoo . Happy you're back in control of everything. Scary when things just don't make normal sense. Proves there's so much more to diabetes than people realise even us experts.
Guess the last few days have just been a pain in the ar*e.
