hi

being on medication ( MST a Amitriptelin)for arthritis and other sever disability problems I have to have a regular blood test. A couple of month ago my GP told me that my BS is too high and requested another test with the same result. Since then I have had several tests for diabetes but my GP told me I am only in very much danger to become a diabetes because I am overweight, but don't have a type 1 or 2 of diabetes jet but I am pre diabetes.
Anyway that was very confusing for me because I did not get any other information about any diet etc. Feeling very unwell the last couple of month, I bought a BS meter and tested my BS every day regular before and after I have eaten food. Very often my BS is over 10.5 even when I have only eaten some none sugar yoghurt.Reading on here about diabetes, I was sure that is a very high BS what worries me a lot.I have a lot of headache, my eyes getting very funny and I have blurred vision and feel very sick when my BS getting over 10.5. Talking to my GP about this, she said that this is not that high and I should watch my diet and exercise. That's all the answers I got.
Excuse me!!! I am mostly in a wheel chair and can't exercise and what diet I have to follow to control my BS? All answers I got was get your weight down. I did not get any further advise or help from my GP and feel so alone with this. I thought I may have a chat with a nurse about my pre diabetes but nothing was offered to me. :(

I know I am a bit overweight with a hight of 162cm a a weight of 80kg and struggle with my weight all my life.

Even I am so glad I found this forum here and could read a lot of diet and other things to help getting my BS down, I am still feeling alone with that and very disappoint in my GP.

Does any1 ever had the same problem with GP's? I am still worried that my regular high BS ( over 10 or 11) will have an impact of my organs. I eat now very healthy and avoid sugar anyway and try to follow diets I am reading on here or on the main diabetes website.

I would like to hear if any1 had the same problems with their GP and what you have done.

thanks for listening x

I think you will find that many people on here have trouble with the entire NHS and not just their GP.

I thought they were being stupid when they told me to exercise when the statins put me off my legs for a month but telling you to exercise when you are in a wheelchair is a whole new height of silliness particularly since they usually tell you to walk more.

The readings you took would be considered high provided you took them 2 hours after eating to give your body a chance regulate your sugar level.

I wouldn't know how to begin to lose weight if I were in a wheelchair but you can do things to lower your sugar level. Don't have sugar in anything especially sugary drinks. Eat half portions of anything containing flour, potato or rice and see how your readings are. If a particular meal produces a reading over 8.5 after two hours then eat even less of what caused the trouble.

Hi KimsMum and welcome to the forum. I too felt very alone when I was diagnosed, at first I was only seeing the diabetic nurse once every 6 months and felt like they didn't care at all what I did between appts. Luckily my Diabetic nurse is lovely, she has encouraged me to see her as often as I would like - weekly if I need, which I did for a while, but now up to monthly. I also requested that my HBA1C test is done once every 3 months, I am really motivated by the 'numbers' so this has really helped me.

As Squire said above I would recommend that you reduce the amount of carbohydrates you eat, your body turns carbohydrates into sugar and your body can't cope with all those carbs. So this means cut down on potatoes, rice, pasta and bread - especially bread. What I have done is to cook similar food to normal but replace pasta or rice with broccolli or cauliflower. If you cook cauliflower and then bake it in the oven with some cheese its really yummy!

Ask us loads of questions and we will do what we can to help!

hi

thanks ever so much for your reply. It's shocking to hear that you guys have been let down by GP/ NHS as well. Thanks for the advise about carbohydrate etc. I already have changed my eating habits and lost a stone even before diagnosed, but now I stuck with the weight. I keep trying and and keep reading on this forum to get help.

Again thanks a lot

Happy weekend xx

Hi. Are you testing around 2 hours after a meal? If so and you are above, say, 8.5 then apart from having a low-carb diet you probably do need to be on at least Metformin. If you are getting a reading of 10.5 2 hours after a typcial meal then that is far too high and your GP is talking rubbish saying it's OK (so what's new). Have a look at the NICE diabetes guidelines which you can download from the NHHS Diabetes or NICE websites and you will see what the advice to GPs is on how to treat the various levels of blood sugar; that's what HCPs should be following.

@ Diabell I often get a high BS from 10 a more , 2 hours after a NORMAL MEAL (LOW CARB and so on)
Sometimes I even have that high BS direct in the morning when not have eaten anything since the last evening.
I have the feeling my GP don't care and believe it's way to high. I just talked to my neighbour who had the same problem with this GP and she changed GP because of that. I am doing the same now because I am really scared that I am going to be more ill as I am already when my BS is not sorted out and I don't get help from a GP or Nurse.

again thanks a lot for your time reading my post and your help and suggestions.

Elke x
