Help! I have so much weight to lose

Oo Sam Adams - not had a proper one of those since I was at Central Station in NY. Boston looks great Zand - did you find the bar where they made 'Cheers'? ;)
Oh, yes, can't find the photo though......now I'll have to go back again won't I?:)

I keep forgetting to say thanks @sanguine for your help with the photos.

Cheers, Beacon Hill, Boston - this one's for Jamrox

My fasting BG this morning was 6.5, so not as bad as it could have been. I expect my liver has been so busy dealing with the beer that it hasn't bothered with a liver dump, so my BG's might get worse as my diet gets better.
Zaaaannnnndddd!!!!!!! Yay!!!!! You're back! Good to see you! Boston looked awesome! :)

Ace, zand! You are going swimming!!
Sorry Pipp, didn't quite manage it on holiday, but I will try it twice in a couple of weeks time. If the second time is no better than the first then I'm giving up on the idea!

Since I am trying to stay awake as long as I can I am going to post my steps for the last almost 2 weeks a little early, hopefully that will keep me busy for a while

holiday
Sat 3891 this was a part day because I was an idiot and forgot to take Pedro on holiday with me!!!!! I remembered when we were 12 miles from home and my wonderful husband insisted on going back for him! I have a packing list which is so old it has 'pesetas' on it, but that translates to dollars for this trip, so it still works.....except I forgot to translate 'Beedrill' - (one of my son's toys from many years back) to Pedro. Pedro has now been added to the updated list so I won't forget him again. Also I was too lazy to adjust Pedro's body clock, so his 'day' ended at 7.00 pm.., which caused me one or two problems when I was trying to do a certain amount of steps per day.

When we used to go on holiday with our sons we always went to a city and visited a football stadium, saw a match too if there was one. So before this holiday our eldest said 'I suppose there will be no sports stadia for you this time Mum?' Then he had this idea........He printed out a list of English Football stadia with their capacity and club name etc....the list is a little old, so some of the numbers the grounds cater for may well be wrong, but he still came up with a good game to motivate me to walk lots on holiday.... I choose a football ground by its crowd capacity and then walk the same (or greater) number of steps so I can tell him which ones I have 'visited' when I get home. Now I would have liked to have managed to walk from around the 7th biggest (Anfield 45,522) straight down the list. When I was young (27) we went on holiday to Paris for 10 days and walked at least 10 miles every day (that's 10 miles by road, not including the extra walking round shops, parks, museums etc.) so I wanted to get back to that level (yes, I know...I'm more than twice the age and weight I was then) When it became obvious that plan was a little ambitious, I chose 2 big grounds which meant a lot to me, and just did as much as I could the other days. So...

Sun 40685 steps - Elland Road (39460) 12th biggest. I could have chosen Everton for this, 10th biggest, but Elland Road means so much more to me because....I'm a Leeds fan.....and I have only ever been there twice - once in 2003-4 (not a good season to watch Arsenal play my team!) and once for my 50th birthday. The family said I could choose anything I wanted, so I chose a weekend in Leeds and we watched them play Swindon Town.
Mon 26302 steps - Carrow Road, Norwich(26034) 32nd biggest
Tues 25803 steps - Craven Cottage, Fulham(25700) 33rd
Weds 25579 steps - Darlington (25500) 34th
Thurs 13456 steps - Oxford United (12500) 63rd - this was a difficult day because we went on a coach trip to Cape Cod, so I couldn't find much time to walk.
Fri 42908 steps - Villa Park (42788) 8th biggest. I had problems reaching this target, we got back to the hotel and I had 2 big blisters and needed 6000 more steps before 7 pm, so I walked round and round a very big pool and fountain in the rain until I had done enough steps. This ground means a lot to me because it was where I saw my first ever Division 1 match (in 1975) and is also the first time I got injured at a footie match. (Collided with a metal bar again, but this time it was soft tissue damage below the ribs - spectacular bruising.) That day is still one of my favourite days ever because standing with the Leeds fans was just amazing.
Sat 20030 - just all the steps we could manage on the day we flew home!

OK so that's the walking bit of the holiday covered, I just wish I had done so well with the food - and drink - element of it.
Hey, welcome back. I don't know how I managed to miss this yesterday, but glad you are posting again.

Zand, if you lived near me I would go with you to the pool. I have had an amazing time swimming today. I felt as if I was walking on water.
But no need for you to apologise. If water aint your thing, that is fine. You do your own amazing stuff.

Thanks Pipp. I wish I wasn't back - don't really want to weigh tomorrow! Don't really want to start low carbing again either. Still I have made a start by drinking water again instead of beer, when I've mastered that one I'll start looking at the food I am eating too! Sigh

You will be fine, zand. You always work things out, and keep us informed and inspired.

OK it's Tuesday and I can't avoid this any longer.
Pedro's latest readings that weren't included in my previous update.

I have been struggling to find the will to get back to healthy eating since the holiday. I haven't even wanted an early morning walk yet, in fact I'd like to lock myself away again. I have spent a long time this morning reading some of the threads I missed while I was away/getting ready to go away. One particular thread, with all its arguments really spoke to me. Also someone described me as 'a little OCD' which has helped me a lot, because that's just not me.....when I am OCD about anything I am mega OCD, not just a little. (yes, I know most people would take the OCD bit to be the insult, not the 'little bit' part, but I'm not most people - if I am going to be OCD I want to do it perfectly!)

So after a 10 day blip, I'm back.

This morning my fasting BG was 7.1, yes needs a little work.;)

SW - the lady who weighed me was really nice today. I was tempted to cheat and wear lighter clothes and maybe take water tablets for a couple of days.......no, not really, that's just not me.

In the last 2 weeks I have put on one pound, which sounds not too bad until I tell you that I weighed at home before I went on holiday and I had lost a pound and a half in the 4 days before my holiday.

So in the last 10 days I have put on 2.5lbs. Not brilliant, but hubby put on 3.5lbs in 7 days and he only had one beer.

So @Dillinger I think I can answer your question now. Yes metformin is helping by keeping my BG's lower and more importantly with increasing insulin sensitivity. I usually put on a lot more weight than that if I eat much at all on holiday, and pre metformin my fasting BG's would have risen to 8.5 quite quickly. I'll still look at this again in a month when I have settled back into a healthy eating plan. Thanks so much for your help.

Or you could look at the upside and conclude the exercise you did was spectacularly successful in containing any weight gain? If, as you state, you ate "well" (ahem), and enjoyed a glass or two of beer, without the exercising efforts, you would probably have gained more? Plus, of course, weighing mid-week could have been a downward blip on the scale.

Don't take every opportunity to beat yourself up, unless you are determined to wear your undies on the outside of your clothing. ;)

Yes it's true, the exercise helped as I hoped it would. It hasn't always worked like this for me though and I have often put on 7lbs on holiday eating (and drinking) less than I did this time and exercising just as much (I'm looking back 10+ years here). So although I hate the fact that I have put on weight I am pleased that I did do things differently this time because I gave my body chance to burn off a lot of excess calories which has to be better long-term than starving it and slowing everything down again. My natural instinct was to eat as little as possible and walk as far and as fast as possible and I am glad I didn't do that this time.

Back to eating sensibly now though because I won't have the opportunity to walk as much for a while.

Ok, zand, so how about treating yourself with the kindness and compassion you show everyone else?

You have acknowledged OCD. Not a little, but a lot. But, like everything else it doesn't have to be perfect. Good enough at anything including OCD is fine. Because if we keep striving for perfection, we will always be disappointed.

I like the way you have rationalised your small weight gain in the last week. I suspect going on that holiday was a big challenge for you, but you did it. The walking you did and the photos I love. Take your time, rest, reflect, recuperate, then start afresh.

It is good to have your updates again. Missed you.
Pipp

Hi Zand when I went to Boston which was only for 5 days I managed to put on about 5 Pounds so your gain is nothing to worry about . I think mine was down to discovering the joys of banana daiquiris in the bar of our hotel !
