Hello does anyone have any advice I may not have thought of? my blood sugars have been a bit raised this afternoon and I felt ok but just not quite right, I have just checked my ketones (urine) and they were at +4, only two away from the top!!!!

I am having a slight panic as I’m at home alone with my son, I have done a correction dose of 3 units

What next? Any advice welcome please

Thanks x

I am sure that you have done the right thing - but is there someone you could contact - a neighbour or friend, even if it is just to let them know the situation and that you plan to contact them at regular intervals - or give a signal such as cutting off after four rings - if they do not hear from you at the arranged time, tell them to contact emergency services.
I hope that you will soon be OK with the correction dose.

I would keep tested and correcting.
It is common when our BG is high to become insulin resistant and need twice as much insulin to correct.

Thank you both, it’s strange because my blood sugar isn’t really high enough to warrant this amount of ketones, I wonder if I have an infection brewing or something...oh the joys of type1....

Resurgam Your suggestion of an emergency plan is a good idea as my family are on holiday at the minute

Thank you

Hi, @Beth c , I don't want to worry you unduly, but, to be on the safe side, there's a rare condition called euglycaemic dka, which is where a person can be dka but not have high bg.

It sometimes comes about through fasting when ill, low carbing, infections.

If your +4 is way higher than it normally is, I'd get it checked out at emergency, even though bg is ok.

It'll probably be totally fine but you've been concerned enough about it to post about it, which suggests your +4 reading is out of the ordinary, and that alone rings a few alarm bells.

There was a thread a few months back where a poster reported a similar thing, although her ketone levels were much higher, she was reassured by keto people that she was fine, even though she'd gone from about 3 to 16 in a short period of time, and it turned out that, no, she wasn't fine, she had a kidney infection, so it was actually a major problem.

Docs aren't that aware of edka, so here's a link describing it:

Thanks for this reply, I have just checked again and they have come down to just above traces, so feels a lot better, my other half is due home any minute too so will at least have support at home. I will check again before bed just to ensure they are still getting lower, if not I will seek medical attention. Thank you

That's good, Beth, looks like you're okay dokay!

Glad that everything came right - the signalling ploy is from my penniless days when I might not even have coins for a call, so I devised various cunning plans which worked without actually having the call connected.

Glad you got better! With such high ketones I would consider hospital, especially if you have trouble getting back down.
