Hi after spending around 3 weeks reading the posts im a little confused about my diagnosis. When i got called in to see the nurse to get the results for diabetes she said i was very very borderline my result was 7.0 fasting she said
that 7.1 was classed as diabetic i said i really dont want the diagnosis on my records if im not actually diabetic she said she needed to speak to the doctor about it she rang me back and said the doctor had said that he wanted to go ahead and diagnose me as diabetic so what i want to know is am i or arnt i?? :?

Thanks fraddycat , are the numbers that run as your signature on your postings your fasting results?
my nurse definately said 7.1 was diabetic and that i was very very borderline at 7.0 ill speak to her when i go on teusday to get it clarified, what fasting number should i be aiming at ? thanks gally

Hi Gally yes my numbers in my signature are my HBA1c results (I didn't fast to get them though) I was 8.9 at diagnosis.

Tell you what though even if you are not diagnosed just yet, you are in the right place to keep yourself on track.

Thanks for replies i have already been diagosed as type 2 fraddycat and have been low carbing for 3 weeks and just started testing 3 days ago but my fasting levels have not yet changed but i feel miles better already i have more energy no afternoon tiredness at work and some other symtoms i was having dont seem as severe this site has been a godsend thanks everyone

This might help you.
If it was a fasting test and it was greater or equal to 7mmol/l then it was diagnostic of diabetes (right on the line)
Unless you have symptoms though it should be confirmed with another test.
This link shows the new HbA1c criteria for diagnosis but towards the bottom, it describes the criteria using fasting glucose .

To be honest, each of the cut off points have been decided by international committee. Someone with a fasting glucose of 6.9mmol/l is not really different to a person with one of 7.1mmol/l. Cut offs need to be put somewhere but it may just come down to what you ate the night before the test.

It would be a good idea to start reading on here, and in other places and start to gradually make changes because whatever the label, it is your health that matters.

Hi. A fasting test isn't the most reliable of the tests, so another might be higher or lower. A GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test) is probably more accurate, but either way your GP should do an HBa1C test in around 3 months which will show your average over 3 months and be a good reference for you to discuss treatment.
