Hello, a while ago I went to the doctor complaining of a sore burning leg. They did some tests and a blood test which came back as Pre-diabetic. After some online assistance my levels dropped. Recently I was drinking lots and needing the bathroom and loosing weight so I had another test. The results shot up to 118 so I was booked into the nurse and another test was done. This came out at 121. I have been given a monitor and am doing throughout the day as well as being given Gliclazide 80mg twice a day. Whilst this has been over the last 8 days , The lowest has been 6.4 but most of the time I am above 10. I have been to the hospital for bloods and my fasting was 9.1. I have noted that my vision is now completely shot, cant see the screen properly and reading my mobile is now a no no. IS this normal when you start on the meds and they get into the system? Any pointers will be happily taken

Hi @JDS73 Welcome to the best place! Firstly I would like to say don't panic about blurred vision. I first noticed this phenomenon in 1971, when there was no such thing as a glucose monitor. Years later I realised elevated glucose readings would cause this. All these years later I only need reading glasses! Once you get your readings on a reasonably even keel you should find many things improve, not least of all your general energy. As it is early days it is important to keep in contact with your diabetes team and not to hesitate contacting them if you notice any sudden changes. The very best of luck!

Thanks Grant, appreciated

The eyesight issue is normal, currently your lenses are bulging. You can get some cheap reading glasses. This normally improves (never heard of it not), so hang on in there and go aggressive on the carb and sugar restrictions. Walk and sleep well to heal quicker.

Hi. From what you say you are likely to be a late onset T1 (LADA) and not T2. Losing weight unexpectedly is a clue. Ask the GP for the two tests GAD and C-Peptide. Gliclazide is a good tablet to start with. You may need to adjust the dosage with nurse guidance. Do reduce the carbs but the Glic may need adjusting to match so use the meter often. The poor vision will be due to the high blood sugar; this is normal and will return to normal as BS goes down; I had the same problem.

The advice for the tests is good but type 2 can lose weight rapidly when high blood sugars are being excreted through urine so still possible

@JDS73 If carbs are still high then glic may be working but still fighting against the food so knowing your diet may help too
