Hi

You may be having hypos overnight and then your liver is releasing glucagon / glucose to save you!

You need to do a 3am test for the next few nights, there really isn't an alternative, so set your alarm!

Also, here are the (relatively) new NHS guidelines on treating hypers:

Glucose: More than 14 Ketones: 0 -1 Take correction dose
Glucose: More than 14 Ketones: 1-3 Take double correction dose and repeat hourly until ketones less than 1
Glucose: More than 14 Ketones: Over 3 Take double correction dose as above and seek medical advice

Measure glucose and ketone levels hourly
Drink plenty of sugar free fluids
Retest ketones every hour until less than 1.

Hi Cupcaake32

If you're sometimes not sure whether or not you have injected, one of the following products may be useful

http://www.needlebay.com/

Best of luck with getting the sugar levels under control today. If it was a missed injection, you should be back to a normal routine in the evening.

If it wasn't a missed injection, there's always a chance that an infection may be causing the increase in sugar levels.

Hi

Are you using Lantus (glargine) as a basal insulin with Levemir as well? It takes all sorts to get the control we all want but just wondered if you could confirm?

Also Lantus is one of those insulins that can give ok results for a long time (months) and then for no real apparent reason can start making bg levels elevate in the morning. It might be that you are going a bit hypo during the night like someone else has said and if this is the case.. doing a bg test will confirm this and you will need to eat some carb to rectify but if you are not going hypo then you will need to start increasing the Lantus in the evening by the sounds of it and just get yourself to do some bg testing during the night so that you can see what the increase is doing to your levels.....

Dont despair.... life with diabetes and using insulin is like this at times.. The body just decides that it wants more or less at times and you just need to keep testing your bg levels to find out what is what...

If your levels drop in the middle of the night and then go high in the morning it is probably the Somogyi Phenomenon. If this is the case increasing the basal in the evening will just make the problem worse.
As the others have said the only way to tell is check in the night. Do you ever wake in the night feeling hot and sticky, or cold and shaky? Either of these may be a clue.
If this is happening a reduction in evening basal or a snack at bedtime may help.

Thank you everyone I go to bed late as i work shifts i did my test of 9.1 at 1 30 am and my 17.6 this morning at 10am i take levimir i dont know why i wrote glargine i used to take that but that was a good two years ago lol it may be more 5am testing than 3 lol i woke up really hot last night it may have been a hypo although i didnt feel shakey or have any other hypo symptoms ill check at 5am then work it all out from there.

cheers guys

Hi Cupcaake32

The trouble with Levemir is that it tends to only work for about 18 hours, which means that if you split the dose you will have 2 periods through the day when you will be operating on one dose of Levemir, and 2 more periods where you will be operating on 2 doses of Levemir.

It could be that the morning highs are a result of your morning Levemir injection from the previous day wearing off halfway through the night, leaving just your evening dose struggling to cope to keep your levels down.

PS I hope your throat clears up soon
