Needles & Being Type 1 Diabetic & Being Partially Blind
Can anyone help me, for the past couple of weeks my insulin keeps coming back out no matter where I inject it, iv told ny diabetic nurses and they carnt figure out why its doing it but iv got to carry on injecting for the rest of this month before I get my pump ( finally :D)iv tried counting to 30 & tried all the different possible places to inject but it does not seem to work !
Does anyone have any tips I could use ?
Any advice welcome
Jo

Re: Help ... My Insulin Keeps Coming Out

I sometimes get a bit of residual insulin that drips out post-injection, but it drips out of the needle rather thank the site. I expect this as once the force of injection wanes, there is no pressure left and the odd bit has no place to go.
I've never had it come out of my body though.
Are you new to diabetic living?

Good luck, please let us know how you get on.

Mart.

Hi JoB90

What type of pen are you using ?

I find I have to change mine when it misfires or the insulin drips out too much .
This is when I know it is time to get a new one!

My DSN/GP allows me to have new pens on script for my cartridges of insulin .

Hope this can help .

Re: Help ... My Insulin Keeps Coming Out

Hi, iv been diabetic for almost 4 years, and over the years it has come out a little when I was new to beibg diabetic but never this much and it happens to me with all my pens, my diabetic nurse has asked me to go to clinic tomorrow to get some new needles to see if it helps but I also have a allergic reaction to aluminium, the needles that im usibg now still make me go a tiny bit red but im not itchy or swell up
Thanks for the advice
Jo

Re: Help ... My Insulin Keeps Coming Out

Jo,

That sucks! I get sore and not so sure whether it's aluminium or the fact that I don't like being stabbed. I do vary injection sites, bur there's nothing worse than hitting a recent site! It kills! All the very best going forward. I sympathise with you massively.

That's horrible for you! I wish I knew what to suggest to help...Hopefully the pump will be a blessing for you and put an end to this!

@Mart...I know what you mean about hitting a recent a recent injection site! even with care and a 4mm needle I still do that sometimes, especially on my stomach and it stings like HELL! Total sympathy to all fellow stabbers!

Re: Help ... My Insulin Keeps Coming Out

Hi,
I know that feeling im currently on size 8mm needles, I dont have lots of fatty tissue so sites iv always used sting

Try using your arms to inject bolus insulins. Injecting in the tummy is all very well and will enable insulin to work fairly quickly but many diabetics find the experience painfull. Injecting in the top part of the arm is virtually painless using a 4mm needle and insulin works more or less ok and leaves no prick marks............

Re: Help ... My Insulin Keeps Coming Out

Hi,
Just a quick update, iv seen my nurse today and she has given me 4mm needles which are very tiny compared to the ones iv been using, I used 2 of them & still my insulin & blood is coming out hopefully by the tine I get my pump it will ve resolved !
Thanks Jo :)

Re: Help ... My Insulin Keeps Coming Out

Just an extra thought for you JoB90.

Do you count to 10 [ten] before taking your needle out ?

Mine drips a bit of insulin out at the end of needle tips if 'not' count to 10[ten]
When counted to 10[ten] this reduces this from happening .

As I say - just an extra thought for you.

Hope you feel much better with using a smaller needle, till you get your pump

Re: Help ... My Insulin Keeps Coming Out

JoB90,

Do you think it would help if you quickly press your clean finger tip over the injection site as soon as the needle is withdrawn? That was what I was advised to do when the DN was teaching me how to inject.

Excellent tip from Ambersilva. I do this too for about 5-10 seconds - long enough for the hole to close up, or longer if I see a (rare) spec of blood in the split second after withdrawing the needle (which seems to cut down on the bruising a bit too).

Re: Help ... My Insulin Keeps Coming Out

Hi,
Yeah iv was counting to 10 but my DSN told me to do it for longer abd press for 10 seconds as well none of these techniques are working :( and they arw baffled why, my insulin is still coming out but iv decided to double up on whatever I take to try and lower my blood sugars so when some insulin comes out iv stull got some in my system
Thank for all the help :)
Jo
