Help needed on figures

Hi everyone,

I sincerely hope you don't mind me sticking my head into this message board but I'm a bit concerned about my blood glucose result. I have not been diagnosed with diabetes.

Back story: I have a history of migraines but the past few months they have dramatically increased from one a year to one every other day, I'm under the consultancy of a neurologist. I also have dizzy/room spin spells, a small amount if alcohol is giving me a raging hangover, I'm exhausted all the time and keep having recurrent thrush (very unusual for me) I do drink and urinate a lot whilst in a migraine attack but not excessively out of it.

Anyway, I'm a vet nurse so have access to a glucometer, I thought I'd take a reading today. The figure came back as 8.4 (fasted sample). Should I get my bloods checked out properly with this reading and if so, how urgently?

Thanks in advance.

tomorrow -- and welcome to the forum @Oonai35 :)

edit - sorry it is past midnight so today !!

I will ring the gp as soon as it opens, should I not eat breakfast so it's a fasted sample or carry on my day as normal?

Hi @Oonai35 and welcome to the forum. Don't panic! One reading of 8.4 could be due to many different factors. You do need to get a HbA1c test from your GP to know where you are. I don't know what your GP surgery is like. It takes 3 weeks to get an appointment at mine. If you are likely to get an appointment today, when you ring, I would not eat until after your test.

Thank you for all your replies. I did consider whether the reading was potentially high due to the migraines and not the other way round (perhaps the stress of it all). I will bob into the chemist on the school run, I wonder if they will do a quick reading?!

Some pharmacies do the meter prick blood test. But it might not be any more accurate than the one you have access to at work.

I'd get a full test .... @Prem51 is right .... they're just a "current day" reading, not an average of where you've been over the last 3 months.

The lovely nurse saw me. Reading of 5.8 so totally normal. Not sure how that explains last night's reading and I'm still no wiser as to my incessant migraines but I think I can probably rule out diabetes. She has strongly advised me to book in with gp to run full bloods though, which I have done.

Hi. You need to be aware of the Dawn Phenomenon or overnight liver dump where the liver dumps glucose to get you ready for the day. This can vary a lot. Best to test 2 hours after a meal and you should be less than 8.5 mmol.

That's great @Oonai35. Even non-diabetics will have high readings from time to time. It could have been due to the migraine, something you had eaten that day, stress, or just your liver having a tantrum! Anyway it's good you got it checked and feel a bit more reassured. The full HbA1c test will give you a better overall result.
