Hi all,
I was diagnosed as type 2 about 5 years ago. I was taking S/R Glucophage 4 in the evening nad everything was going really well. January this year I had to have a major hip reconstruction surgery (I am still on crutches and am awaiting a hip replacement on my left hip which is scheduled for August). Before the op my blood sugar was anything between 5.0 and 7.5, then after the op my blood sugar went up to between 8.0 and 9.8. My nurse wasn't overly concerned as I had just had major surgery and as I cannot put my full weight through my leg I am not as active as I was. A week later however , I noticed my blood sugar count creeping up to 11.0, so I went back to the nurse and she started me on Januvia to take with my metformin. My blood sugar continued to rise and is now about 12.0 to 13.0 first thing in the morning and can be anything up to 16.0 2 hours after a meal. I went back to my nurse again and suggested I tried going back on to the normal metformin, she agreed and I now take 3 x 850g a day. It has made no difference! I stopped taking the Januvia for a couple of days to see if it made a difference and it made no difference at all. My blood sugar had not gone up or down. I do not get any typical symptons like needing to drink a lot etc. I watch what I eat...I am overweight ,but is down to not being able to exercise enough due to condition of my hips. I am on a few painkillers and an antiinflammatory. Any advice appreciated as I need to get my blood sugar down before my next op!

Ooohhh good grief you are having problems, poor you. Tell what do you eat, write down typical days menu for us, lets see if we can get that bg down again.
It is possible that all that stress you are having due to your mobility problems and an operation ahead of you is causing bg problems or that you might need a review of your medication, more added to what you are taking already.
As you say you cannot be as active as you would like to be, are you able to do lots of upper body exercises at all? You know ANY movement counts, so keep sitting down and just twiddle your toes around, flex those feet and relax and so on, it will all help your circulation, fidgeting is good too.
I hope all goes well with your operation.
All the best

Karen

This is what I typically eat in a day. They are not large portions. My partner eats the same as me and his blood sugar is always around 3.0 ( i test him sometimes to make sure my meters not broken :P !)

Sorry me again...It could be partly to do with stress...but what I don't understand is why the Januvia did nothing at all?

Hehehe you have a very patient and brave partner then, mine would have freaked if I had turned him into a pin cushion, but now he is diabetic too he has to test himself, though he doesnt and all that is another story....

Reading your daily diet, do you think you can try and cut down or cut out completely on the carbohydrates there what with rice, potatoes and bread and cereal and see how that goes? You could increase your veg intake if you are left hungry, if you just try it for 2 - 3 days to give you an idea if your high bg is due to too many carbs? Do you think that you could manage that?

Also you had an operation not so long ago, you dont have any infection anywhere?
I dont really know about medication, I think our Dennis, he is a moderator here, is a bit of an expert there? You could send him a PM and ask.

Let us know how you get on

Karen x
