Hi all first of all apologies as I'm a bit of a novist in using this forum to reply correctly. I'm really fed up at the minute and been signed of work now for 2 weeks. I'm worried as in a new job and feel I'll get the chop as in probation. I'm on Levemir at moment and now on 14 units. I'm on a low carb diet and been told from neighbours and ex colleagues (from local small Sainsbury's local) "flipping heck you lost some weight". This I feel in most weight more from the last 2 weeks.

I'm getting really down as my sugars are not going down as much and also in the last 48hrs have risen to between 13 to 15 after sleep. I have been up through out the night always between 2 and 4am. I take my insulin at 10:30 pm. I take 1 metformin slow release and 1 sitiglipton in morning.

I am getting really upset and I'm a crying a lot just can't take it anymore. Last year I had a endoscopy (camera inside me) and got told I had a "slight hernia".

My tummy is herting me at minute like a constant dull ache.

What I don't know is is this metformin tum? as reduced my metformin prior to insulin as I have weak tum. Does any on insulin get tummy troubles?

Also I feel that i need more insulin but drs just telling me to go up 2 units but having to wait for them when I want to increase my self.

I'm Sorry if does not make sense, I'm just fed up as now on top of my bloods now got tummy ache.

Please help sorry again.

Anyone please you advise is better than drs u all have the experience and knowledge.

I'm Type 1 but I'd suggest talking to your doctor about the Metformin if you think it might be making your tummy worse.

I also agree that it looks like your insulin dose is out if you're going high. Speak to your nurse about increasing it gradually and don't put it up without checking or too quickly as dose changes can take a while to have an effect and you don't want to risk going too low.

Tagging @Mep as a Type 2 on insulin.

I'm not sure whether or not you are newly diagnosed with diabetes? But my thought is that you probably firstly need to know what your pancreas is doing so you can get the right treatment. Have you had a c-peptide test done recently? The reason I mention this is because you say you're on low carb diet, 2x oral meds, plus basal insulin and yet you're still getting high readings. It could be that you no longer produce sufficient insulin (especially if you're not newly diagnosed). If this is the case then oral meds do nothing for you and you really need to be on both basal and bolus insulins which is the treatment I'm on for that exact reason. The c-peptide test will show how much insulin your pancreas produces. I often comment that I think this should be a regular test (along with the GAD test and hbA1c test) done on type 2's as things can change. Clearly though your basal dosage isn't working well for you along with your oral meds.

Yes, metformin can certainly upset your stomach too. I also have a sliding hiatal hernia myself and understand the pain of that. When I eat my food sometimes sits in my chest... but it's actually my stomach that has slid through the lower oesophageal sphincter... then slides back down and I get the food stuck to the top of my stomach from the pressure of sliding. I can feel it too and get a fair bit of pain when it's playing up. I know this is the case as I had a gastric emptying study done that showed it doing exactly what I just said. This is also a possibility for you no doubt. It may well be that your digestive system is moving food slowly through your system too which would keep your blood sugar level up longer. Have you had a gastric emptying study done at all? Sorry I'm asking you lots of questions... but I'm hoping you are able to get some relief sooner than later. Hopefully I've given you some ideas that you can discuss with your doc. I wish you the best. :)

@azure @Mep Hi both sorry for the late reply. My sugars have been sky high at night still. Today I was at the diabetic clinic at hospital. I have had the test as suggested as above and awaiting for them. I was advised to stop on the insulin and go into victoza. Slightly nervous as start it tomorrow morning. When I was in hospital today advised it can make u feel sick and runs to the loo. I know everyone is different but nervous about the side effects :(

I don't know much about Victoza @diabeticnewby but I know some people her use it. You could ask about it in Ask A Question or do a Search if that would help you.

Try not to be too nervous. It may be fine - and I hope it is :)
