can someone tell me what I need to do, not been feeling very well last few days, bg slowly raising, tried correction doses etc but its now 24 and I'm feeling ill, just done a pen shot of 8 units but not sure if I have to eat drink etc

Have you actually set a temp basal rate?
If you don't feel like eating then don't unless hypo. Surely this was the same when you were on MDI? That's assuming you didn't just pluck 8 units of insulin out of the air and injected with the intention of eating as well.

@debbie222 What was the 8 units for? If it was a properly calculated correction dose then you should keep testing to see if your BS comes down, but you shouldn't need to eat unless you go too low.

If the 8 units was a combination of a correction dose and a meal bolus, then you'd need to eat the appropriate amount of carbs for the meal bit of the dose.

You should also test for ketones as your BS is quite high. If you continue to have problems keeping your BS down because of this illness, then it may be best to phone 111 or your DSN for advice.

keep testing every 30-45 minutes

double check / change cannula
change vial of insulin for next cannula change

disconnect / re prime cannula

all I can think of

Thank you, ive only been on pump just over 2 months, it was a bent cannula, never had this happen before

It happens from time to time. If correction doesn't work, always change cannula. Glad you are feeling better, 24mmol not nice!

The trouble I recognise with the pump is that when you put the insert in you don't know if like you said that it could have bent , and it doesn't let you know that your insulin is going where it should

Absolute pain the in the back side when it happens but luckily it doesn't happen often and as long as bg's keep being monitored it's soon spotted

I once inserted a teflon set in my backside, went to a dinner event and was going back and forth to the ladies loos due to diet Pepsi and soda water. Everything was ok until I started eating a large carb meal, did a bolus and about 1.5hrs later, started to feel fidgety and slightly thirsty. Did a bg test and bg was up on 17mmol so went to ladies to see if the tube was working and went to disconnect only to find that the set had come out if backside and the bolus
Hadn't been delivered into me but into my knickers. It could only happen to me ......my evening ruined as it took ages for bg to lower even with another set inserted.......After that fiasco, I always revert to carrying my insulin pen as back up incase pump plays up.
I make the rule of when bg is over 12mmol and first correction doesn't work, revert to pen to save going spare with worrying about whether set is ok or not.

That's why it's standard practice to change your set before a meal, you soon know if the set works or not :)
