Hi All,

I was just wanting to ask for some advice please..

I am type 2 diabetic for 6 years, my dad was type 1 and died at aged 40, and my mum is type 2.

I have got to the last straw to be honest, I have tried everything and am just getting no where...
after i was diagnosed i joined a gym and became an instructor teaching high intensity aerobics, and started to weight train.

Couple of years down the line and this is no more.i had been put onto metformin almost immediately and couple of years after taking metformin the consultant put me onto victoza..i tried this for a while but it didnt work, my energy levels were dropping and i was feeling like **** all the time.
I eventually had to quit my job at the gym, stop training and reduce my hours at my full time job as I have been so ill and had no energy :(

i could go on about the journey...but will focus on here and now...

I am now taking 2 grams of metformin, the max glimeparide and max pioglitazone a day, and 1.2mg of victoza, also am taking 36 units of novorapid 3 times a day and 38 units of glargine...I have developed autonomic neuropathy so am having terrible stomach and bowel issues (that are ruling my life), i have early stages of diabetic retinopathy, and my blood sugars are still around 18-30!

I was emergency admitted into hospital 2 wks ago as my urine text readings showed +4 blood +4 glucose +3 ketones...and I am starting to feel that way again :(

can anyone offer me any advice? i am seeing consultant again next wk and want to go in armed and ready with ideas for how to get my life back

I eat healthy (ish)...i have the odd takeaway but not very often, I don't drink alcohol, i drink loads of water and stick to my med regime...but feel like everything is just getting worse.

I don't think i would be eligible for it but i thought i might ask about a pump?

thanks so much for any help you can give
Ian

You say you're eating healthy, are you following the NHS mantra? Have a look at Jenny Rhuls 'blood sugar 101'. Are you reducing your carbs? The processed stuff e.g. the white stuff like pasta, rice, bread. Eat foods that grow above ground, cabbage, cauli, sprouts etc. Berries is the fruit of choice. And if you have a meter - eat to it. In other words test before you eat and 2 hours after, its the only way you will know what works for you. There is loads of info out there, and folk will be along soon with more info.

Sounds like going low carb might be a last resort? Works for loads of peoe on here.

Thanks Sam...at this point am willing to try anything. -am so tired all the time and feel so ****** all the time

Hi. I'm sorry to hear of your problems. I agree with Dawnmc that the right diet is essential as part of the treatment. Are you overweight? It is essential to have a BMI in the right range. Set yourself a target daily max intake of carbs; say 150gms or less. Those you do have should be low-GI. If you are overweight then keeping the carbs down will gradually reduce insulin resistance and also reduce blood sugar and insulin needs.

A lot of so called healthy foods, plain white bread, white rice etc are just as bad as sugar. You get lulled into the false way fo thinking that if you have a cheese sandwhich, as long as you don't over do the cheese and don't put lots of sweet chutney on it, it is OK. Far from it, white bread has the same glucose response curve as sugar. Just as bad is so called wholemeal bread, because most of it is not wholemeal. waitrose wholemeal bread only contains 6% wholegrains.

The damage is done by our highly refined white carbs which is almost as addictive as sugar. You did good with the exercise, but you have to cut out certain types of carbohydrates probably the ones you still eat. They don't tell you that but as many here will testify, white carbs are bad news.

Thanks dawn and yorks...I don't each much white bread..I stick to brown if I want it and eat very little pre packed stuff..my amazing partner prepares meals for me.
I have quite a few medical diagnosis' and it all just seems like an uphill struggle at the min. The diabetes has fed reduced my quality of life and taken over my life in a negative way
