help please!

Hi, not sure on what to do. I have had very high bs the last few days and have just tested my ketones on a wee strip and i have very high ketones. I have had ketoacidosis before years ago so i know when it is very bad but should i ring nhs helpline? I dont have my diabetes team number so i cant ring them. I have been doing my jabs so dont know has caused it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you x

Hi I just suggested ringing the NHS helpline to someione else on here. Have you taken a correction dose, and you are Type 1 ? I hope you can get help with lowering your BS soon.

Yes you suggested it to me!

I am im a similar boat. My levels are 20 after correcting. I have just taken another 5 units to see what happens as I think that may take them down.

I had keytones too, 0.5 though.

Not much advice but empathy. X

Thank you. Yes im type 1 and i have done a correction dose. Im going to test again in a minute as its been about an hour and see whats happened.
 
Keep me informed. Im exactly the same as you. Ive just took another correction so will be retesting in an hour.

What were your keytones if you dont mind me asking?

Have you ate more than usual o er christmas?

Just that if your bolus qty has increased thru any extra food then sometimes you need to have mire basal.

Dsn's don't tell you this..

Eg... If you were to normally have 10 units of bolus and 10 units of basal a day (just an example) then this is a 50/50 ratio.

If your bolus then goes up to 20 a day because of extra eating your basal / bolus goes out of kilter... So you may need extra basal as well for days of any extra eats.

I know I used to have my pump basal rate running at 150% extra for the extra quantity of foods that I wld eat over xmas time. I was the same when I injected, I had to keep my basal in line with my bolus's otherwise I wld run high....

Hope your correction bolus works...
However with both of you really if tour levels are so high, especially over 12.0 you may well find that you need extra correction bolus's.

Just keep an hourly check on them as well as ringing 111 if you need to....

just seen your post and i would do whatever it takes to get those BG's down to below 15 to avoid the ketones even if it means staying up.

if they aren't down by tomorrow morning i would be tempted to treat yourself as though you have an infection --follow sick day rules to keep yourself in the zone
 
Are any of you using the faulty pens? I did read somewhere on the forum that some insulin pens are being recalled because they are under dosing.

Follow the Sick Day Rules first, if after that your still have high ketone levels then seek medical attention:

Faulty insulin pens recalled
Diabetes sufferers are being warned to check their insulin pens after the Medicines and healthcare products regulatory gency (Mhra) issued a recall of the pens today.

The Mhra said some the insulin pens sold by manufacturer Owen Mumford have faulty dose selectors that are erroneously reverting to zero, and could cause an under-dose of insulin to be given.

Pens with the three-letter codes 7VJ, 7WB, 7WC, 7WD, 8CN, 8CP, 8CR, 8EL, 8EM, 8JK, 8JM, 8JN, 8JP, 8VV, or 8VW printed on their packaging or with the codes 7RT, 7PN, 7PP, 7RV, 8KK, or 8XD printed on the lower part of the pen body are reportedly affected by the fault.
