Hi I am looking for some advice . I take metformin 1000 twice daily and long acting Levemir insulin at night. I am currently on 26 units. I keep getti g really bad bg spikes and my morning fasting readings are around 7.8 so I'm increasing my insulin at the moment. I am also suffering with bad headaches and leg pain just generally feeling not well. has anyone had a similar problem and suggestions of how long to get right or anything else to try.

Hi Brucie,

I don't know about Levemir. I take Glyclazie min. dose (first gluburide which i preferred) and also 3x800 Metformin. Your pharma blurb may indicated stomach ache with Metformin, but i have had no problem with this drug. Perhpas your dose is low?

Also, I spread my meds before and after meals so that i don't get a stomach ache or
gastroparesis, which i do sometimes if the meal is large and sudden. As for the a.m. number, i have read reports that it is typically high in the morning.

Sorry, i can't give any medical feedback.

You say that your fasting readings are around 7.8-have you got a meter to test what your readings go up to after eating?

Are you taking any other drugs ie statins, ramipril etc?

How long have you been diagnosed and been on levimir?

Info is a bit limited to try and give help on really from the info contained within it-reasons for headaches and feeling unwell could be lots of things......have you spoken to GP about them?

Re: newbie to insulin.

Hi. am currently on victoza 1.8 only, this is failing to bring my BS down to acceptable levels, am always over 10 on waking up n 15 - 18 during the days 2-4hrs after eating. Diabetic team have wanted me to consider using insulin levemir to try n get some better control, I have resisted it due to fear [terrified] of the fat storing n weight gain that comes with using insulin, have just shifted 1.5 stone of weight with victoza. Am tiny in limbs n body shape except for my barrel belly thanks to gliclazide! [refused to take it anymore since oct 2010] it put almost 2stone on me despite me eating an extremely healthy diet n cut back on carbs as well to avoid the BS spikes plus weight gain! Am finally n very reluctantly thinking of "trying" low dose only of insulin to see IF it will bring my BS levels down. Have swotted up on insulins plus levemir but to my baffled brain its a minefield out there once you go onto insulin.... ! it is so scary to me plus I am so wary of the fat storing n weight gain that insulin does. As I really just CANT afford to start to gain any heavy weight on my chest or belly due to having had heart surgery PDA patent ductus arteriosis [hole in heart] my specialist is aware of this n suggested I think of trying levemir insulin as it isnt supposed to put as much weight on you? [personally DONT believe this fact] n find it soooo hard to even trust words of the medics after what happened with bloody gliclazide!!! Havent had much of an appeptite with the victoza, due to the appetite suppressant that it is am disappointed as I was did n have pinned ALL my hopes on it to get my BS down which it hasnt. Please can anyone guide steer me into the right direction? as I really dont know what to do n feel so stuck between a rock n hard place. Last time I saw diabetic team n they kept going on n on n on at me I ended up in tears. [they backed off me when I got so upset] Am due to see a senior diabetic specialist nurse this thursday n she WILL be addresssing this to me again n am DREADING it too. As was told am really scraping bottom of the barrel. Have held out n resisted insulin up to now . Hope someone can advise me sensitively, sorry for the long drawn out post but am truly "lost" . Anna.

Hi Anna , I have only been on insin ( levemir) fir approx 10 weeks I haven't put weight on as yet but finding it difficult to get blood glucose levels down at the moment.

I have spoke to my doctor about my headaches and leg pain but he didn't seem to bothered about it.

I have had lots of blood tests which all seem ok so I am struggling at the moment. I have now increased my units to 30 and will see what this does in the next few days.

Brucie :D
