Help understand what hba1c test is

Hi, my 4yr old son was only diagnosed in october so i am silly only learning anyway i recived a clinic appointmant and asked to do a hba1c test i did as i was told and sent it off but i dont understand what the test is or what it tells us can anyone help :?:
