Help while waiting for doctors appointment

Hello,

I am new here. I have not been diagnosed with diabetes, but I have a lot of symptoms of diabetes. I have a bloodtest in a week and will get the results in two weeks (they cannot book me in for an earlier appointment). But I feel so unwell, I find it hard to get through the day normally (work, etc.). I went to a NHS walk in center today, but they said I have to wait for my GP's bloodtest.

I checked on this site for symptoms, and I have the following:
- Polyphagia - increased appetite
- Polydipsia - increased thirst & fluid intake
- Polyuria - the need to urinate frequently
- Feeling tired during the day, particularly after meals
- Often feeling hungry, particularly if you feel hungry shortly after eating
I also feel faint and nauseous, I have trouble concentrating, vision trouble and generally slurry with words, when typing, or something simple like walking up the stairs and forgetting to lift a foot. And my right shoulder hurts and has impaired movement.

Does this sound like Diabetes to you? What could I do to treat it, while I am waiting for a doctor to see me?

Thank you very much for your help.

It's a very anxious time waiting....you sort of know what the outcome is going to be even though you are only guessing at this time...the symptoms are horrid and make you worry...hope you hear soon and good luck :)

you can always grab a meter from a chemist and get an idea of what your BG is.
if its in double figures, you have diabetes,

I had all Symptoms you describe plus more...there are soo many but the main ones you described I had. I am a new t2 and sill in shock.....been unwell for years with odd symptoms now I no the cause....it's all been very conflicting and confusing the main thing for me was to start medication I am taking it slowly.....

Hello I had all those symptoms a couple of months ago. So decided to contact my GP and ask could I book in for a blood test to rule out Diabetes. The GP agreed and I went and had the blood test at 10.00am and at 18.00 hrs she was ringing me at home to say my bm was 27! Yes I had type 2 Diabetes. I was immediately booked in to see the Diabetic Nurse within 48 hrs and was given Metformin tabs and some diet sheets, and the chance to ask any questions.

It was a shock ,but I kind of prepared myself for the bad news. I am quite good at knowing what the right thing is to eat, in the past I have just overindulged and eaten too much, been overweight for too many years. However since Xmas I had been eating healthily and had lost 2 stone, but the increased thirst and going to wee every hour was not right for me! I lost 7lbs the week before I was diagnosed. I can understand its a scary time for you, but the sooner you see a GP and get the blood test done then help will be at hand. There is so much info available and the Diabetes .co.uk ( this website ) has the answers to most of it. The Walk-in Centre should have been able to at least check your bm ( blood sugars) with a finger prick test and if you were above 12 they can often refer you to your GP and ask that you see someone same day. I would try and see any GP at your surgery next week asap and try not to worry too much. It is a lifestyle change but everyone reacts differently and you can do things at a pace that is right for you. I hope you get the blood test soon and if it is positive there is help to make you feel better. Soon as I started taking the tablets I feel 100% better, more energy, not feeling thirsty, nothaving to get up 6 times a night for a wee! Sleeping better and I have an answer to why I had been feeling so awful. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Thank you all for your comments and kind words. This is really helpful although quite scary as it seems now quite likely that I do have diabetes. I guess I have to wait for the bloodtests to be sure.
I might try to do a meter reading, but I am not sure I will do it right.

This seems like a really lovely forum, and I guess I will come here a lot more now. Right now I am quite dizzy with all the information and worry.

It's very very easy to test with a meter. Just prick your finger, get a tiny drop of blood, the test strip sucks it up and you get a result in about 5 seconds.

You can get them in Boots or Tesco. Not sure how much they cost, probably around a tenner.

Hi. Some of your symptoms could well be diabetes, others could be anything. Increased appetite is not a normal diabetes symptom, neither is feeling faint and nauseous or having shoulder problems. If you do have very high blood sugars i.e. hyperglycaemic then the brain does behave in strange ways and affects people in different ways. Yes, do try to get hold of a meter or get the local chemist to do a spot check before you see the doc. If you do have elevated blood sugar or just in case, do radically reduce your carb intake as carbs are converted to glucose in the blood.

If you have a Lloyds pharmacy near you they will do a free check on you to see what you bg level is.
