I’ve had type 1 diabetes for two years now and have probably only taken it semi serious for a a quarter of that time as in that time I’ve struggled with depression and diabetes is the last thing I cared about. Now I’m in a lot better place I’d like help on how to control it. As currently all I do is eat not caring how many carbs are in the meal and just take the insulin to combat that meal but it means my bloods are never low. Last weeks average blood has been 22.7. Would just like some info on how many carbs a meal I should have and any meal ideas would be much appreciated

Hi @adam00e

Welcome to the forums.

What insulin regime are you on and has your medical team given you an insulin to carb ratio to use?

Reconnecting with the medical team is a good starting point. Insulin requirements have probably increased over the last two years, so basal and bolus dosages need to be reviewed. You will have to establish an insulin:carb ratio that you can use for meal bolusing, and it is different for everyone. Next, get a better idea of how much carb meals contain by looking at nutrition labels and make an effort to limit the carbs. Getting to the point where you feel in control will also help you feel better about yourself.

Welcome. I think you may feel a lot better physically and mentally if you get those bgs down.
I had a period of not caring for various reasons then got more focussed.
I've tried not to expect perfection but here's the basics:
1 Get the basal bit right by testing over a 24 hour period whilst not eating carbs i.e. no bolus
2 If you tend to eat similar meals try and work out how many units of insulin (carbs: insulin ratio) you need to get your glucose into range 3-4 hours after a meal. It helps if you do eat similar meals at similar times and don't eat carby snacks!
I've found going low carb (30g) per meal helps with not having to be boring about counting stuff that is hard to count e.g. home made dishes. You can make up the difference with lots of meat/eggs, non starchy veg and cheese + cream (these foods are better because they won't need a lot of fiddly dose calculations and its a myth that sat fat causes heart diseas)..
I always recommend Adam Brown's Bright Spots and Landmines as its free and is written by a non doctor based on his own t1 experiences, He's American and Californian but its still useful!

Hi Adam, you can do this! Since diagnosis my motto is that I will not let this beat me! I will take this as a challenge!
