Hi,
I've trawled this excellent forum but been unable to find answers to these, so would be very grateful for some help:

Q1: Is there any advantage to a T1 in going low-carb? I'm LADA with a BMI of 22, take insulin in low doses and don't need to lose weight.

Q2: Have any of you experienced tummy troubles when starting on a low carb diet? (I am at present but am not sure if its the diet) :(

Q3: US websites give two figures for dietary carbs, which of these are equivalent to the UK carb content, or do I add them together?

Thanks,

Robin

Quick ansa.. No 1... The less carbs, the less insulin, the less opportunity to hypo, supposedly!!-LOL!!
I dont eat a lot of carbs, just lots of beg that I always carn count.. I'm lean and muscly. Got told I bery good but I need more fat for infusion sets!!

Hi,
I'm T1 and low carb. Here are my answers:

1. Yes. Definitely. When I started low carbing my hba1c went from 7.7% to 6.5%. As donelly says, fewer hypos too. Gone from a few a week to a few very mild ones per month.

2. Nope. None.

3. I don't follow carb prescriptions, I just don't eat bread, pasta, rice, potato etc. If you wanted to, buy Richard Bernstein's Diabetes Diet book, he prescribes 6g for breakfast, 12g for lunch and dinner. It's got recipes in it, but I found it too strict, so just avoid the carbs given above.

If you're hitting the 6.5% hba1c target then consider low carbing otherwise you're doing a good enough job with carbs!
