Sometimes research reveals the most surprising things... other times...

Countries that have opted to use high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in their food and drink industry have a 20% higher mean prevalence of diabetes than countries that have minimal use of or do not use the sweetener.

"Most populations have an almost insatiable appetite for sweet foods, but regrettably our metabolism has not evolved sufficiently to be able to process the fructose from high fructose corn syrup in the quantities that some people are consuming it," said Ulijaszek.

This one caused me an 'I told you so' moment ie that there wasn't much HFCS in British and most European food. so we couldn't blame diabetes here on it.
The paper has set the cat among the pigeons.

Here's the full paper

The New York Times had an article on it a couple of days ago.

some quotes
Dr. Michael I. Goran, a professor of preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and an author of the study.
“We’re not saying that high-fructose corn syrup causes diabetes or that it is the only factor or even the only dietary factor with a relation to diabetes,” .. “But it does support a growing body of evidence linking high-fructose corn syrup and diabetes.”

The corn refiners
“This latest article by Dr. Goran is severely flawed, misleading and risks setting off unfounded alarm about a safe and proven food and beverage ingredient,”

Marion Nestle (a well known academic and author of several books on nutrition and politics was quoted as saying
“I think it’s a stretch to say the study shows high-fructose corn syrup has anything special to do with diabetes,” Dr. Nestle said. “Diabetes is a function of development. The more cars, more TVs, more cellphones, more sugar, more meat, more fat, more calories, more obesity, the more diabetes you have.”
She noted that the study:
“falls right in the middle of the Corn Refiners fight with the Sugar Association,” a reference to the legal war being waged between the two industry groups over the marketing of high-fructose corn syrup

I've now discovered that the discussion has since carried on to Marion Nestles blog with some comments by Dr Goran which put whole thing into a little more perspective.
