Hi all

Wondered if anyone has some advice

I had to Inform DVLA back in April last year that I had type 1 insulin dependent diabetes. They sent lots of forms and I had to go to a assessment with the DVLA medical doctor and was granted a 1 year HGV Licence ( 3 year car ) in September 2023.

My licence is due for renewal at end of September 2024 and I've heard nothing from the DVLA even though it states they would write and send a reminder 90 days before.

Can anyone advise of the process ?

Do I need to send in D2 / D4 forms ?

Thanks

Often the letter arrives as late as 30 days before

You don’t need a new D4 medical unless your old one expired anyway

You current license WILL expire long before you get your new license but so long as you believe you will get a renewal and you have asked your go to confirm there is no reason for you to stop driving AND dvla confirm you have applied for renewal, then you can drive on an expired license for upto 12 months

Also double check the expiry on your car... as mine has alway been coterminus with the HGV

I'm sure there's more.
DLV are behind with everything right now so it's all taking longer than it should.
I have a medical driving license that has to be renewed every three years.
Recently got a new three year one after driving for six month on an expired one.
Make sure all applications are done correctly and in on time.

Vocational licenses are quite different, and done with via a different team, there will be at least 1 medical, probably, 2 to have done, and they can optionally request that you see an appointed optician

you MUST have full blood glucose reading for the 6 weeks prior to the medicals(not cgm)
you MUST have a good reason fr any hypo's, and confirm you were aware of them!

I’ve missed 1 finger prick test in the last 6 weeks or 2 in 6 months. Will they be iffy about this? I’ve gotta see a consultant. Last 2 weeks there have been no missing tests so by the time I get the consultant appointment I’ll have the 6 weeks but wanna know (best guess will do) if they will refuse it if the appointment is sooner.

Depends on the consultant and how careful he check…. But yes you can have your license revoked for that as in reapplying for you license you agreed to the dvla rules in blood testing

However if you keep it upto date no you should be ok by the time the meter is inspected

When I was first on insulin it was 3 months not 6 weeks so that was harder

Just make sure you copy anything you send to them AND any correspondence from them. This has saved me aggro ever since my first licence in 1988. I kept every appointment information, including Eye Screening tests, as evidence of receiving medical care. Good luck!
