Hello my name is Mick, am 42 and from London/Essex.

Have recently been diagnosed a Type 2 and am not on any tablets as yet but I suppose it will only be a matter of time!

It appears it may have been brought on by the fact I have high blood pressure and cholesteral as I have no family history of it or any weight issues. I have also been told I'm quite young to be a Type 2 but too be honest I don't know as I'm finding out more about it every day. I have my Desmond Day booked in for a couple of weeks time and I believe I will also start self testing around that time also.

It was a bit of a suprise........Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

Hope you are all well have a good w'end!

Mick

Hi. Daisy should be along shortly with general guidance to the newly diagnosed and links to various parts of the forum. It's very unlikely that either the cholesterol or blood pressure have caused the diabetes, although it's good to keep them under control to help minimise any damage that elevated blood glucose might cause. With many of us including myself we have no idea where the Type 2 came from. Yes, you are a bit on the young side for Type 2 so your GP might give you some tests to ensure it is Type 2 and not one of the other variants. Are you overweight? Your GP may keep you on a good diet for a few months before blood tests to check your average BG. Then, if necessary, tablets will be added. Most of us do test our own BG with a meter which you can usually obtain FOC from one of the manufacturers. Good luck and do ask any more questions you may have.

Thanks appreciate the info and reply

No am not overweight and go to the gym etc when possible although have started to use an exercise bike more now since being diagnosed. Also have improved my diet trying to eat more healthy and not to skip meals which I had a habit of doing previously just having a coffee for breakfast etc

What is Type 1.5 by the way???

I have posted this on your other thread :)

Hi Micky. The 'type 1.5' in my signature is just me trying to make a point that there is no such thing as just two types of diabetes i.e. Type 1 and Type 2 which many in the NHS like to rigidly use. I'm one of the 20% of Type 2s who have never been overweight and hence are not insulin resistant; we need the medication focus to be around the pancreas not delivering enough insulin rather than the body not using the insulin the pancreas does deliver. If you look at the main page of this website it explains the more formal use of the term Type 1.5.
