Hi all,
I was originally dx with Type 2 back in May of this year. I'm a 36 year old guy, weight was approx. 88kg and all round health was pretty OK - hadn't been near a doctor in about 10 years, but bg around the 17 mark. Completely shocked at the time and was originally put on metformin. After a couple of months put onto 2 gliclazide and then a couple of months later my medication was up to 4 metformin and 4 gliclazide per day. Net effect was that my bg was still too high @ approx 12, had watched diet pretty carefully (but not religiously).
Met a diabetes consultant last week who told me that she doesn't think I am a Type 2 at all - my weight/age lack of effect of medication mean I am inbetween (from reading in here I think this means Type 1.5/LADA but she didn't specifically say so). I am starting insulin in the morning and am cra**ing it (not from the metformin his time!).
I'll try to keep updating in here - the mylifestyle tool looks brilliant - pity I just found it now! I have a million questions - my most prevalent are these:
(1) Can this be beaten - the 'terminal' aspect scares me - the consultant said I would be on insulin for life - is this 100% true?? I am quite a determined individual so whatever I usually put my mind to I will stick to it pretty rigorously.
(2) Re-starting the gym on Friday - my gym routine will be first thing in the morning before breakfast - could this make me go hypo if I go to the gym without eating? My job is on the high-stress side and mealtimes are a horror to regularise - I don't really do routines so is a routine an important part of management? Or can I just use insulin on a 'Pay as you Go' basis - as and when needed?
(3) I have been told that I will be injecting 4 times a day - is it possible to ask for a 'once a day' type solution - does one exist? If my levels are better controlled can that go to 3 times a day etc.?
Sorry I'm rambling - I will read more and try to learn as much as possible and keep updating you guys on how Im getting on - must get a blog started!
