Customer helplines that use recorded menus that promise to put me through to the right person but never do - and being ill. Oh, and did I mention customer helplines :)
Hi, Just a quick hello from a recently diagnosed type 2 diabetic. I was diagnosed in early March this year and was put straight on insulin although I am now on a combination of 4X500mg of Metformin and Insulin. Average bg last 30 days 6.5, not really sure if this is good or not but I feel 100% better than I did before I was diagnosed :D

Looking forward to reading through the forum archives and gleaning as much info about diabetes as I can.

Regards

Kim

Hi Kim/Sid.
Nice to see another new face around here. Welcome.

Your average Bg figure over 30 days sounds good, but it's what the daily figures are that really matter. Do you test regularly ? Do you get Lancets and strips on prescription ?

As a guide so you know what you should aim for as a T2 here are the Bg levels for 2009.

Fasting (waking)...............between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
2 hrs after meals..............no more than 8.5 mmol/l.

If you can try to remain within those guidelines you won't go far wrong. Pleased to see you are going to have a good look round. Some questions have been answered before. No matter, ask what you want. We will try to help.

Ken.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

cugila, to answer your questions:

yes I have been testing regularly, up unti last week I have been testing before each meal and at bedtime ie. before each insuline jab.

I do get the strips on prescription but they (the docs) don't like to prescribe enough for a month (4 X a day) they just give me a 50 pack each time. My diabetic nurse (hospital) had asked me to test 4 X a day to get a good idea of my bg levels whilst I was increasing the Metformin and decreasing the Innsulin. Now things are more stable I am testing 2 x a day. I've also lost a fair bit of weight since being diagnosed down from 17.10 to 15.00stone and I hope to reduce my insulin further as I loose more weight. I have been on steroids for 2 years for respiratory problems which has made my weight increase and no doubt has been a contributing factor to my diabetes, my respiratory consultant wants to wean me off the steroid this June which may help reduce my insulin needs farther.

My average fasting/waking...............6.0
2 hours after lunch today..................6.2*

*Ive not tested after meals before, but I will check a few times after my evening meals in future, thanks for the tip.

Im sure I will have some questions and I hope to contribute to the forum in the future....

Kim
