I am not newly diagnosed but although I have attended a DEREK, (a morning session all about Diabetes), I still know very little. For instance when I test then eat, then test again, my sugar level goes up, so why not test and not eat, therefore keeping the level lower?
Also, I have been feeling 'light headed' recently. I have an appointment with my Nurse and will talk to her about this, but I am worried by some of the posts on here about Hypos. I have been extra thirsty this week, which I have never been before, yesterday I drank and drank but couldn't face food, so apart from some ice cream, didn't eat anything through the day and only some fresh fruit in the evening.

I have also found a couple of times that my levels go high, and I cannot see with glasses, I went to the optician who could not explain why I could see perfectly without my glasses, this lasted for a couple of months Until I got my sugar levels under control (I think) then I needed the glasses again. Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing?

Hi and welcome fizzball

Could you please confirm whether you are type 1 or type 2. Your profile says 1, but the course you were on is for type 2. I am easily confused

Hi there Fizzball,
Sounds like you have type 2 diabetes. Sorry to hear you're sounding a bit confused about diabetes - there is a lot to take in and I don't think anyone ever stops learning new things about this condition.

The reason you test your blood before and after you eat, is so that you are able to monitor how the meal you have eaten has affected your blood glucose levels. Although there are some pretty hard and fast rules about what raises blood glucose levels (mainly sugars and carbohydrates) there are a lot of grey areas - everyone is different in exactly how different foods affect them.
If for example you loved to eat apples (which are pretty high in sugars and carb), by testing before and then after you ate an apple you would discover how much of a blood glucose rise it would give. You may discover that one apple doesn't spike your bloods, or you may decide that actually it would be better to only have half of an apple at any one time to ensure that your bloods stay in a safe range.

Can't explain your experiences with glasses. Blurry vision occurs with high BGs and it would affect you with or without glasses. Perhaps your glasses were a bit dirty?

If you're feeling a little light headed, just check you blood glucose level and you can determine if there is anything to worry about.

Have a good look around the forum for more advice around diabetes. Also you may like to take a look at http://www.teambloodglucose.com/TeamBG/Kit_Bag.html

Hello and welcome, try not to worry to much as there is a lot to take in, it does get a little easier and I'm still learning .

With best wishes

I get blurred vision all the time. It is when your blood sugar levels are up and when they down. You will find after you have started your better eating habits that this will occur less. Your medical practitioners should get you an opticians appointment as a natural course, as this is one of the ways they see how you are doing .

Thanks Nosher, please explain what are better eating habits? I do eat a lot of fruit but then I thought that was good for you? Not so keen on apples but I eat lots of oranges, some bananas, mango, melon etc., I often don't bother with breakfast and I know I should. my bg levels are very high at the moment and I need to get them down and fast.

What are your Blood Glucose numbers? Of a morning before breakfast and before and 2hr after eating
Cut your carbs to cut your BG numbers
Simple is to cut all grain, grain product. Sugar and fruit and potato for a month
Read up on LCHF diet

It must be the fruit then, I think. I don't take sugar, but in an effort to lose a bit of weight I have stopped eating in the evening except for fruit, a couple of (large) oranges, grapes etc., I will stop and hope that it will make a difference. I don't really like potato or veg that much. Although, no grains (bread etc.,) no fruit, what is left?

Hello nice to meet you, so much to take in and so much to learn about , which is life long learning I am finding...
Take a list with all your questions to your appointment with your nurse and there maybe some answers here to help you to.
We can only answer from our own experiences and individual knowledge , so find out what works for you...

Remember to breath and relax ....best wishes Kat

Bananas give me high readings. Unripe ones are better but I don't like the taste.
20.6 is high. When and what did you last eat before that?

I'm on the LCHF and there is lots to eat, it is a battle for the first week, the carbs are addictive. There is a section on LCHF on the forum too.
What are your numbers

Thanks for this, I have just looked at the LCHF pages, it looks OK., I have never eaten a salad in my life and probably won't now, and I am not a lover of veg, but I eat sprouts (are they OK?) and sweetcorn (not together) I love yoghurts so I am feeling quite positive now. X
