Hi Everyone, Im a newly diagnosed 26year old male with type 1 about 4 months now. Was going very good, was just working out my correct insulin dosage which took a while but seem to have it sorted now. I am currently using Novarapid at meals and Lantus at night. I was on too much meal time insulin and kept having small lows after meals usally about 3.3mmol/L. But my insulin was revised by my diabetic nurse and i havent gone low for 2 weeks now and they havent really been that high.

My problem:

Before xmas I got a bad head cold and I started to feel dizzy abit, like i was standing on a boat that was moving up and down. I went to my GP and he said it was an ear infection that is effecting my balance. He put me on stemetil tablets and i took them for a couple of days and it seems to stop so I stopped taking them and my cold also went. Then after xmas I caught that flu/cough that was going around and the dizziness came back.

Went back to my GP last week and he checked my blood pressure, heart, breathing etc and said it was fine but I had chest infection so he put me on the same tablets again and a mild antibiotic for a week. Stopped taking the stemetil tablets as I felt even more dizzier on them but took the antibiotic. I was away in Tenerife last week and I seemed fine only felt that bouncy/dizzy feeling a few times over there. But since I have come back it has gotten alot worse. My blood sugar has been good, staying around the 6 - 7mmol/L with a few times going about 11-12mmol/L after a few meals but then coming down to about 7-8mmol/L.

I had noticed that the dizziness happened when my b/s was around 5 or 6 (which is prefect), and that it was never really in the morning and starting to notice it at lunch time.

But all this week since ive been back from Tenerife it has been happening all the time and it very annoying feels like the floor is moving when I stand or walk. I have also noticed that when I get this feeling that my pupils are very big and that my hands get pretty cold.

If any one could shed some light on this would be great before I go back to my GP in a few days.

Thanks a mill.

Alan

What you describe sounds very like my hubby had a couple of years ago. Like you, he said he felt as though he was constantly on a boat.It was Labrynthitis. Doctor advised him to lie flat on his back for 7 days or so. He took no medication as I recall and the bed-rest did solve the problem.Hubby is not diabetic. It's possible that what you have is nothing related to the diabetes and may not even be what my hubby had but it just sounds very similar, so thought you might want to check that out.
Hope your dizziness clears up soon. Hubby found it really unsettling and was so relieved when it cleared up.

hya, it may well be the cold u had started off some sort of inner ear infection/imbalance which may soon return to normal, i totally sympathise with you i had it 8 yrs ago and it lasted 2 yrs, last yr back it came with tinnitus, im now more than likely to have meneires disease and im constantly on the wobble, its awful so i know how u feel, hope it gets better soon,
if it is from your cold it should start to get better quickly, if i can help feel free to pm me :D

Yep is very annoying, kinda gets you depressed a bit as you dont want to walk anywhere just want to lye down.

At least it not diabetes related. Going to go back to the doctor for a third time on monday and try and get it sorted!

I can deal/cope with diabetes, but this bouncy feeling is unbearable!

Thanks

Alan

hya alan,
i know how u feel ,the diabetes and other health probs is copable its this thats depressing me :? if u need to feel free to pm me :D

My aunt had this a couple of years back and it took a long time to resolve. One of the bugs doing the rounds at the time seems to have had a predilection for getting into ears, not a few other people caught it around the same time but were fortunate that it cleared up a lot quicker. It came back to a lesser degree this winter for some other people. I'd get back to your doctor. One neighbour fell down in the street and was too dizzy to get up again.
