Hi everyone

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes just over 18 months ago and am currently on 2g of glucophage and 15mg of Pioglitazone every day.

Unfortunately my blood glucose levels are on the up again so it looks like I will be on Byetta as well from November.

Is anyone else on Byetta? If so, what side effects (if any) have you experienced and is weight loss one of them!!

Cheers

Hi Heather

Wellcome to the forum.

Here is a link about Byetta that may be of interest:
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=692

You do not give any indication of the kind of diet you are on? Do you restrict carbohydrates at all ( bread, rice, pasta etc? If you give us an idea of the kind of food you eat, people here may be able to offer advice.

Regards

Pavlos

Hi Heather.
Welcome to the forum. Have a good look around and check out all the other areas of the forum.

I see Pavlos has directed you to the existing Byetta thread where there is much information about side effects and the success that members have had. If you can't find an answer and it is about Byetta, then post a question there. We usually have the answers.

I am on Byetta and if a weight loss of 4 stone and great Bg control since January is anything to go by, I think I am one of it's successes ? There are many more.

Hi Pavlosn and cugila,

With regards to my diet, I am not on a restricted diet as such, but obviously have cut down on sugar laden foods and watch my carbohydrate intake as am trying to lose weight (unsuccessfully at the moment).

This is one of the reasons why my diabetes nurse is wanting me to try the byetta.

I have just been advised to up my atorvastatin to 40mg per day too, as apparently my cholestrol is still over 4.

Add to that the fact I have an underactive thyroid, an ulcer and IBS I am not feeling very well at the moment.

Thanks very much for your response. I will have a look at that article with interest.

Hi Heather, i've been on Byetta for 3 months now and have had steady weight loss since the first week, a total of 14.6 Kg lost so far. Not as great a loss as some but i'll settle for slow and steady as long as it stays off :D . The only side effects i did have were diarrhoea and nausea for around 8-10 weeks but the nausea has gone now and i only seem to get diarrhoea if i over do it on the carbs. My hba1c is down from 7.5 to 6.5 and my DN wants me to cut down my metformin from 3 x 850g tablets to 2 x 850g a day.

Thanks for your reply mumerbear, shame byetta didn't suit you. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I'll be ok on it.

Peecee, its good to see how your hba1c has gone down. Mine is currently at 8.6. I hope byetta works for me and that my side effects aren't too bad. That's the only thing concerning me as I'm a trainer and in class between 9am and 4pm so not really good for me to keep running out of the classroom.

I also think that your weight loss is great. Did you change your diet at all since going on the byetta or is that just due to taking it.

Cheers

Heather

Hi Heather, my diet hasn't changed a great deal since taking the byetta, although i do now eat earlier as i found that i was getting indigestion by eating later. I've also reduced portion sizes as i dont feel as hungry. For me i wasn't constantly running to the toilet, just first thing in morning or at 3am if i ate too late  I hope you get good results when you start byetta.
