Hi all, I'm not diabetic and after seeing a few friends suffer with it I don't want to be - so I've joined here to get some handy hints re diet as I eat far, far too many carbs ... I'm nearer 60 than 50, and walk every day and go to 3-4 exercise classes per week (metafit and bootcamp).

Hello @nicnac6367 it's something we would of all hoped to avoid ! It's good you want to do something now about this.

Exercise is good but diet is king - ditch the carbs, buy a blood glucose meter, check your levels first thing in the morning before food (so in a fasted state) and pick up new dietary habits which mainly revolve around cooking all your meals from scratch and avoiding sugar, bread, pasta, potatoes, here's a great site to find new inspiration: https://www.dietdoctor.com/

Hello and welcome.

Have you had an HbA1c test at all? I'm just checking whether you are at normal BG levels or are seeing some elevation. The thing is, if you have a normal BG, you're at the target level already, and you might not really need to do much other than be aware and monitor what you're eating. I avoid processed foods where possible, for example.

However - it's certainly possible to make changes that can have very positive effects. As JuicyJ suggests, my pattern has been to drop all the "high-carb" items - particularly those that are both high in carbs and that we tend to eat in quantity.

For me that has meant a daily exclusion of bread, pastry, pasta, cereals, rice, potatoes, fruit and sugar in all its forms. As you'll be aware, this means actively ignoring the current "healthy eating advice". I aim for around 20g carb per day, with those carbs largely coming from green veg. Most of my diet is meat, fish, dairy and vegetable. Very occasionally I will have a few berries. The results are in my sig block below, but I achieved a normal BG value within four months and in the four years since I've lost over 70lbs.

The weightloss has allowed me to start exercising again (exercise played absolutely no part in the BG change or most of the weight loss) and I'm rebuilding some muscle. I'm closer to 70 than 60, but I'm feeling better than I have for 15 years.

Yes diet is very important, but maintaining muscle mass is also important. Insulin resistance in the skeletal muscles is a driver of type two diabetes.

So make sure your exercise plan includes things like resistance training.

Good luck! I wish I had known how to avoid diabetes years ago. You are very wise to consider prevention
