Hi everyone. I'm Sanna, 28 from London. I've been lurking around here for a while too but finally decided to say hello. This is my third year of having type 1. I still have loads of ups and downs and still feel ****** about having diabetes. I'm not the slimmest of girls and find it very difficult to tell people I have type 1 as they have the misconception that it's because I must eat too much or that it must be because I have too much sugar. Does anyone else have this issue or is it just me and the fact that I am Asian and people refuse to educate themselves before making comments???

Welcome to the forum @Sanna_A

Unfortunately your not the first to be asked this and you won't be the last, try not to let these comments get you down. Have a good read through the type 1 section and if you have any questions do come back and ask.

Hi. If you are on insulin and perhaps a bit overweight it might help to reduce your carb intake. This should help reduce your wieght a bit but more importantly should help reduce insulin resistance. This should in turn help reduce your insulin needs and blood sugar swings. Perhaps you could give us some idea of your typical diet and your insulin regime.

Hi guys thanks for your comments and support. I meant ups and downs in terms of my mood and how I feel towards having diabetes. Sorry that's my fault should have communicated that a bit more clearly. I have changed my diet and am losing weight controllably. Having seen people with diabetes, not controlling it and chronic pancreatitis it's scared me a lot and I constantly have this downer about diabetes.

I really don't mean to sound all gloomy and cast a dark cloud but I feel like ranting here would help as I'm sure there are more people that feel really meeeeh. It's difficult to talk to people that are not in the same boat as you as I hate people looking at me differently or feeling sorry for me. I'd rather have uplifting support and understanding then sympathy.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Unfortunately people can say the wrong things due to misunderstanding of the condition. The good news is that you have found the right place as no matter which type of the condition we have we are all fighting this in our individual ways. It is totally normal to have ups and downs. We none of us asked for this condition but it certainly helps focus on our health and the good parts of our health we do enjoy. We can't help how we feel but the good thing about the forum is that there is always something who can help even if you just need to vent about an ignorant remark some well intentioned person made that fell short of being nice. I try and look for a positive in each day and the fact that this gave me a good kick to look at my lifestyle and start taking better care of myself. This won't go away but you can take control. Tomorrow is a new day so why not treat yourself to some quality time to just appreciate all the good things in your life. sunflowers always cheer me up so here's smiley bunch of flowers from me.
