hi. my name is sue, i am 39, and have been type one for over 20 years, since i was 15.
ive recently gone through some problems with quite frightening hypos, but luckily, i seem to have been able to rein back some control, and they dont seem to be happening anymore.
they were mostly through the night, where my husband would wake up, aware that i was acting ''weird''. he would try to get me to have a drink of coke, or similar, to bring me round, but i was totally unresponsive, and acting like a bit of a lunatic. anyway, long story short, a few visits from paramedics ensued, and i had an appointment at the hospital, lowered my insulin, checked my levels more regularly, and seem to have gone back to being ok.
im recently having a few hypos, but not ''scary'' ones, just due to the fact that im on a whole fitness campaign, losing weight, going to aerobics, the gym etc, and my body is screaming ''what on earth is going on here??'' haha

anyway, i look forward to having a look around the forum, and picking up some tips. even though i have being diabetic for such a long time, i still feel that i dont actually know much at all about it.

nice to meet you all xxx sue xxx

Hello Sue and welcome to the forum. I think you are wise to get back to regular testing as the end results with better insulin adjustment will prove.

You next port of call should be the T1 section where you will read all about other T1 members and the problems they have encountered.

thanks so much guys :)

and yep, will go have a look at the type 1 section once ive posted this.

its funny, i think you sort of ignore being diabetic sometimes. just sort of accept it, without actually thinking too much about what you are doing to make it better. well, i certainly have. its only really when a problem arises that you are forced to think about it more.
well, maybe not everyone does that, but i would say that i myself have! i have to pay it more attention though.

Hi Sue and welcome to the forum! :)

Pleased you got your night-time hypo's sorted, but can I ask you if you have done a carb counting course such as DAFNE?......if the answer is no I would advise you to make enquiries with your dsn as this will undoubtedly help stabilise your control even more and hopefully reduce your hypoglycemic episodes.

hi there nigel. and wow, ive not even heard of that! i just try to eat healthily, with nothing too sweet. i have a diabetes check at the doctors this friday actually, so i will mention it then. thank you for your reply :) xxx

Hi Sue,

I am another fan of the carb counting courses. My hospital don't run them at all...but they did agree to get a dietician help me with carb counting. Basically, you work out how much insulin you need for every say, 10 grams of carbs you eat...and then, you inject the appropriate amount for the meal you are going to eat. I struck lucky, and my ratio is 1 unit for every 10 grams, which helps with my not so good maths, but it really changed my diabetic life.

i would guess, that ifyou go with questions, they should try and help you, to help yourself.

best of luck.

oh right, you see, lol, that just makes the right amount of sense! why have i not heard of that before? thank you :)
and i will definitely mention it on friday at my appointment.
and haha yes, my maths isnt up to much either, so it would be good if mine were the same as yours!

my insulin does seem rather hit and miss. i just have the same amount, no matter what im due to eat. no one has ever said anything about doing it that other, more intelligent, way! xxx

Hello Sue

A good site to have a look at will be BDEC (google BDEC diabetes) and you will be able to get the basics of using ratios to adjust your insulin to.

This will also explain the basics viewtopic.php?f=19&t=17899

The key to good control is unfortunately in the amount of bg tests that people do, so once you start testing 6 times a day, you will then start to learn where you going right and wrong with food and the amount of bolus insulin you inject at each meal time.

Welcome to forum by the way :)
