Type 1
hi everyone. I am new on here although I have been type 1 for 35 years and use a Medtronic insulin pump. I have recently started a ketogenic diet and have much improved my blood glucose levels, but notice that the majority of diabetics using this diet are normally type 2. Is it not recommended for type 1's? I am having trouble eating the amounts of fat required on this diet and believing that it is not harmful!

Welcome @Pattipickle :) I've had Type 1 22 years so a bit of a way to go to catch up with you : D

Some Type 1s low carb. @robert72 is one of them. Most Type 1s here eat moderate carbs. I personally eat around 180g per day and have an Hba1C of 33. I do eat a fair amount of fat too, but try to eat healthy kinds like avocado and oily fish.

Hi @Pattipickle and welcome :)

I've had type 1 for 35 years too and last year moved to a pump. As for the keto diet and fat content, Robert who @azure has already tagged has followed this diet for around 3 years with good results, hopefully he'll be able to advise further. Best wishes.

Hello @Pattipickle and welcome to the forum.:)
I've been Type 1 for 30 years, but have been doing Low Carb High Fat for about 30 months. I lost some weight steadily and easily over that time, and feel much better generally than when on a high carb diet, and I'm injecting much smaller doses of insulin -which also is helpful, including to NHS costs, apparently! I eat moderately low carb - about 50g per day.

Hi @Pattipickle - I have been low-carbing for over three years now and not had any problems (been T1 for almost 45 years). I found the high fat part challenging to start with but have got over that now ;)

Hello @Pattipickle, I've been low carbing for about a year. I find that the greatly reduced boluses keep my blood sugar much more stable and that if I do have to correct, it's by (comparatively) small amounts.

Thanks for your reply.....I'm of an age when just working out how to use this forum is " difficult" , only just found that I had some replays, lol! I'm sticking with low carb as bg's are much improved although weight loss has stopped and could do with loosing more.

Thanks Robert, I am slow working out how to use this forum, appreciate all the advice I'm getting. Have you or anyone found that their cholesterol has gone up due to the high fat content? "Happy Diabetes day "by the way

Yep - my cholesterol went up. It seems to happen to some, but others report that theirs goes down.

I've been low carbing for about 10 years - before it was a recognized diet for diabetes - I fell in to that because I just felt better when limiting my carbs. What's interesting is my weight has not deviated over the last 10 years - I've been holding steady at 185 pounds/ 13.21 stone or 83.9 KGs ( wished everybody used the same method for measurement) I think the trick is to stay consistent on carbs/fat/proteins. Sure there are recommended amounts but considering how different we are as individuals -different metabolic rates etc - it's one of those things where you just got to give it a try and make adjustments as you go until you find something that makes your mind and body feel good. I kind of fell in to it so I can;t say how long it took tme o find that happy medium - but it probably took years.
