Hi, I'm Tim and I'm looking for help/reassurance.
Last year I was told I was pre-diabetic, about 4-5 weeks ago I started with severe thirst and going to the toilet 5-6 time on a night. Saturday gone my partner came home to find me very sleepy, confused and slurring my words. She phoned 111 and I was taken to the hospital my BS was 20.1. I have since had bloods at the GP and my hba1c has come back at 94mmol yet, my GP has asked for repeat bloods in about 2 weeks, is this normal practice?

There's usually two HbA1c's to double check whether you're diabetic, so yes, that is normal. Considering you were that high though... Yeah. We can't diagnose on here, but even if your HbA1c was half that, you'd still be higher than you want to be. The thing is, you slurring your words and the confusion when you were hospitalised... Did anyone at the hospital check you for ketones, and if so, what were they? (Should be in your online record?).

All in all, yes, you get a repeat done for a formal diagnosis. But if your ketones were high, you might want to ask whether they can throw a C-peptide and a GAD test in with the next HbA1c, because of that. And if it ever happens again, don't hesitate call in the cavalry. That's what they're there for.

I think it depends on the protocols of the practice you are with.
I was diagnosed with HbA1c of 91 told I was a very bad diabetic and sent away with a prescription for Atorvastatin and Metformin.
The tablets made me very ill so I relied on diet and was no longer diabetic in 6 months, so there is hope for getting back to normal.

Hi, this is what concerns me. I have all the symptoms, lost a stone over a couple of weeks and so tired. I run my own business and it's not great feeling like this. This time last year my hba1c was 46 and now double that. I'm already on atorvastatin and BP tablets, suppose I just want to know either way.
 
Hi @DAGCHAP and welcome aboard. I too was confused and a bit nervous when first diagnosed. What helped me most was read, read , reading on here until my eyes were blurry. Use the search bar or just click in to anything remotely connected. Yo'll find lots of people who have been where you are and are now doing phenomenally well.

Hi and welcome DAGCHAP . Your weight loss and the fact that you went from prediabetic to high blood sugars in a short period time may suggest you are late onset type 1. Now I’m not suggesting you are T1, but I think it is a worthwhile test given the speed at which your blood sugars jumped up. Ask your Dr for a C-peptide test, if the hospital didn’t already do this test . C-peptides are tested to see how much insulin your pancreas is producing. There is a correlation between C-peptides and insulin. C-peptides are more stable than insulin, which only has a very short shelf life, so your C-peptides are tested not insulin.

I think the most frightening bit is my mum and her dad lost both legs to diabetes.
