High and Hungry

And another thing ! is it possible to have high levels 9-12 and still feel hungry ? This one puzzles me because I often feel really hungry them I check my BG and find I'm high. This is really confusing when I feel starving. Does something else govern appetite or is it just BG levels and your mind !!

Suggest you then eat non-carb foods - like cheese or cold meat. I don't know if there is any correlation between feeling hungry & sugar levels - I doubt it, or non Ds would be hungry all the time.

If blood glucose levels are high then hunger can be a symptom. Also thirst and frequent urination.

It can also be a symptom when your blood sugar levels are too low as well.

okay, so have I completely misunderstood the relationship between bg levels and hunger ? I thought low bg level meant you needed food ? especially if your injecting because then your bg level will continue to drop. I'm sooooo confused

OK DB'
Let's get back to basics for now.......

If your levels are low then yes, you need to think about some food. Depends what time of day we are talking about really. If it is a morning fasting level then you need to get some breakfast into yourself.

Your Insulin dose should be such that it allows you to compensate for the food (carbs) you are eating and make sure your level doesn't go too high 2 hrs after meals.

If you are injecting and not having any/much food then your levels will drop........

As a T2 your guideline max Bg levels should be no more than 8.5 mmol/l 2 hrs after meals.

I know you have been around a while but to try and stop the confusion, have you read the advice that Sue and I post regularly about Basic advice for Newly Diagnosed. I honestly think you need to have a read of that and get your head round a few things. Anything you are not clear about we can help.......

You will get there with a little help from your friends on here...... :)

Hello Dingbat

I use insulin and I'm classed as Type 1 but with regards to using it doesnt really matter what type you are as insulin will more or less do the same for you as it does for me. The only difference will be if you also use oral med which you have informed us that you dont anymore.

Its really very confooosing lol as hunger can mean low bg levels but sometimes people with high bg levels also find that they feel very hungry. Also, people with high bg levels also dont feel at all hungry and just have extreme thirst. All the more why people do need to test to find out and not just rely on how they feel.

I have a feeling that you haven't as yet been to see a D consultant to find out about how to calculate a ratio of insulin to carb so if this is the case, ask a GP or DSN at your surgery to explain things to you. It is important that you do eat fairly regularly and that for the time being you dont go below 100g carb per day. Once youve got to grips with using insulin correctly to achieve healthy targets being about 5-7mmol before main meals, then no higher than 9 two hrs later, then you'll be moving in the right direction. Lots of bg testing is needed I'm afraid and trial and error. There are those who use bolus/basal and achieve tight control and are less than 8 two hrs later and eat a small snack and those who inject slightly less bolus insulin and are on 9 two hrs later and by doing so dont need to eat a snack, so it's up to you to decide what to do but get some help from a DSN.

Look at BDEC regarding carb counting or just google carb counting insulin to carb ratios.

With regards to Lantus, yr bg level of 12 is a bit on the high side as a fasting so you do need to increase it by about 1u at a time and wait for a day or so. Do you eat a snack at all before you go to bed as that might be a reason for yr bg level to go up. Also, what is yr bg level before you go to bed? Once youve got yr insulin to carb ratios sorted you should be able to inject the correct bolus amount for yr eve meal and then yr bedtime bg level should be about the same. You'll then be able to inject the correct amount of Lantus based on what yr bg level is.

I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. I have seen 2 condultants, 2 GP's and 3 DSN's and no one has mentioned matching Insulin to carb intake. The last advice was increase the nightime dose by 1 every 4 days untill my morning level is 4-6.
I'll take your advice I think, start again and begin by reading the links mentioned above.
There is so much conflicting stuff I get confused as to which way to turn, but coming here always seems bring me back to some sanity. As I said, I think I thought I knew, but now I think Don't.
Thanks again

If you're hungry, eat something that makes you feel full. For me, that means nuts, cheese, meat - anything with fat in it will make you feel full.

Honestly, I could eat marmite sandwiches all day long, and still feel hungry. But give me a handful of nuts, or a pepperami, and I'm full 'til feeding time!
