High BG in the evenings

Hi,

Looking for some advice, hopefully confirming I am doing the right thing.

Over Christmas, my blood sugars were great, all within range. Just before New Year's my blood sugars started creeping up, but I was able to correct for this without much of a problem. However, the last 4/5 days my BG has been a lot higher than normal, and I have been around 17-18 mmol/L even though 2 hours after dinner I am around 10-11 mmol/L and it has taken a lot to get me back down to within a good range, between 6-8 extra units.

I have noticed my insulin intake has increased over the last few weeks, going from 16 units of Lantus to 22 units and around 4-5 units for breakfast to 8 units, 6 units for lunch to 8-10 units and 8 units for dinner to 14 units. I run 3 times a week and I usually have to reduce my insulin for 12 hours after my run, but I have actually been having to inject more.

I have changed both my bolus and basal to new vials to see if it was that and it's not improved my BG at all. I have also increased my Lantus to 24 units last night. Any advice/ideas? I think my honeymoon period is well and truly over!

Hi @alhubb it sounds like you have a good handle on this already with adjusting your basal, however I think with all the bugs flying round that possible infection could be a cause ? as also changing your insulin just in case it's going off, and also has there been much change in exercise over this period ?

Sounds as if you are doing all the things I would.

One additional thought: Are you doing correction doses? When my BG gets high (above about 14 mmol/l), I become insulin resistant so need a lot more insulin to bring it down. I increase my correction bolus by about 50% and do lots of checks and correct again after a couple of hours) assuming I have used about half of my correct bolus.
I also try to avoid eating too many carbs as I feel this may be adding to the problem. So my usual fruity breakfast is replaced by eggy brekfast, etc.

Thanks both!

Yeah, I was thinking whether it could be that I am getting ill, but so far I feel OK (apart from the headaches and nauseousness from high blood sugar!).

Yes, there has been a change of routine exercise wise as I am quite active in my job and I have been on leave for Christmas, but I have been doing a lot more exercise (walking, running etc) than I normally would during the week to make up for it and I have not seen this big of a jump before when doing the same thing.

Ah, thats interesting about the correction doses, I will bare that in mind in future. I have been doing lots of checks and correcting, it is so frustrating and I am absolutely shattered now as it is taking me until 2-3am to get it back down! I've also been eating less carbs the last few days to try and sort it out, but to no avail!

Thank you very much both, some things to think about!
