High blood but no ketone weightloss

For the last week my control has gone out the window. I'd been doing really well then suddenly doing the same things has resulted in sky high blood. I'm thinking it's maybe the end of my honeymoon. I'm trying to get it back under control but it's a one step at a time process as I feel like I need to start right at the beginning so trying to get my basel right again. How is it even possible that one week 10u during the day was perfect then a week later your up at 18u and it still doesn't hold you flat! Very frustrating. Anyway the result of all this has been that my blood has been high all week. At least over 12. I've been regularly checking for ketones, I check morning, mid day and before bed and all are clear yet I've still lost weight this week. I'm not dieting, eating the same as I always have yet still lost weight. Is it possible to lose weight with high blood alone but no ketones?

With high bg levels your kidneys are working overtime to get rid of the excess glucose so you naturally pee more and you lose body fluids.......which in turn leads to some weight loss.

If your out of your honeymoon period then your insulin requirements will go up, just get your basal dose right before looking at anything else, the following explains how you should carry out a basal check:

Thanks noblehead, that would explain it. I think it must be an end of the honeymoon as things have just gone completely wonky and there's no other factors that are different. I have been trying to get my basel right first, but it's a slow process. Going from 10u last week to 18 at the moment and still not right so will up again tomorrow. It's hard to do a proper basel test as I always seem to be high and need to do correction doses so I'm trying to get my overnight right by going to bed as low as possible and no correction but night 7 on and I'm still not right. It's exhausting because I'm up every night testing. I hate being high, it makes me feel rubbish and I feel like all I'm doing it taking loads of bolus to try and correct. Is there a better way to go about fixing all this? I feel like all I'm doing is firefighting just now.

Even though first thing is to get your basal right which is what you are trying to do, you will also find that once your basal goes up like that your carb ratio will change as well.
Have you been told that you become more insulin resistant when your numbers are high? Thus you will need more for a correction as well.
Make sure you have plenty of glucose handy just in case you have a sudden drop in blood sugars whilst your pancreas goes through it's final splutter.

I did think I must be experiencing some sort of insulin resistance as well. My carbs:Insulin ratio has become insane, although I can't work it out exact right now it's something like 1:3 grams which considering I was about 1:12 a week ago is frustrating. I assume it's because my basel is rubbish. For some reason I seem to plummet around dinner time. I wake up high, take a correction that hardly touches it, take another and so on, dinner time I'll still be a bit high then bam after dinner I hypo! It's like all the insulin from the day finally kicks in. It's really driving me mad. I went to bed last night at 7.6 and woke at 16.2, that was after I upped my basel to 18u (im on levemir twice a day. I'm focusing on getting my overnight level right first but also upping my morning but it's hard to see of that's right just now when I'm taking so many corrections) Feel like I need even more than that yet just least week I was taking half that amount. Is that normal? It's really driving me mad. I don't know where to start and what to do anymore to even try fixing all this. I'm upping my basel in doses of 2u but I could be here for ages at this rate!!

Are you unwell or experienced something stressful?I went through that few weeks ago and it was mad. no matter how much insulin I took I was still high. It went back to normal so be careful with upping insulin too much. Drink lots of water and test for hypos

I've not been unwell and no more stressed than usual (single working mum to a 2 year old, that in itself is stressful haha) I'm the same. Yesterday I had 57 units of novorapid and was no less than 10 all day until my bedtime reading of 7.6. I'm making sure my meals are as low card as possible so that they should have minimal affect on my readings. I feel like all I'm doing is taking correction doses. There's no science behind my dose as tbh I have no clue what my correction is anymore so I'm just going oh I'll take 10u or 15u if I'm really high and it's having little affect. I'm at the stage where I don't care if I take too much of a correction and go hypo as right now I think getting levels up from a hypo will be easier than getting them down but they won't go down! I'm going insane. I really have no clue what to try next and feel like I'm stuck in a vicious circle. I'll go to bed okish tonight, I'll wake high in the morning, I'll spend all day trying to get my levels down then repeat!

57 units! Thats definitely something else than just end of honeymoon period. There can be many factors such as stress ( sometimes we don't realise that we are under stress), menstruation or some infection. Go to see the doctor just in case

Yup! It's scary! The week before all this I was on an average of 15 a day! I have this hope that if I can sort the overnight and wake up "normal" it will help make the daytime easier to control.

Perhaps change your insulin cartridges both basal and bolus and make sure your pens are working properly. Also please get in touch with your nurse or team so they can help you out over this sticky patch.

After 2 days of this I changed both basel and bolus pens just incase so I don't think it's those. I'm rotating injection sites each time as well. I'll give it another day or two and if no improvement I will give them a call.

Hi. I would be inclined to seriously reduce the carbs at least for a while and make up with proteins, fats etc. This would help control the blood sugar and might reduce any hidden internal body fat causing some insulin resistance. I'm only guessing of course but carb reduction should help a bit until things become a little clearer.

Daibell I've been doing low carbs. since diagnosis I've been mainly low carbing with the odd binge (oops!) But since all this wonkyness I've been living on eggs, bacon, cheese and chicken to try and keep as low carb as possible. I'm not overweight, I'm 5'10 and just under 10st so don't have lots of fat anyway, well yeah unless there is lots of hidden internal fat! I'm going to try fasting tomorrow. I'll do my correction dose and try to survive on water till dinner time to try and clear my system out as it were. I need to get to the bottom on this and will try literally anything!!
