High Blood Sugar! HELP!

Hi, I don't really do things like this but I need some help!

I've been T1 for almost 5 years now and have always managed it fine, for the past 12 months I've had high blood sugar in the morning (between 10 - 20) I've tried everything!

Eating before bed in case my Lantus is too much
Increasing my Lantus dose
Making sure I'm in range before bed (6 - 8)

I have no idea what else to do, my diet is fairly healthy I'm a vegetarian and I cycle to work often (unless it's super rainy!)

Just trying to see if anyone else has experienced this and has any advice.

Love in advance, Lucia x

hi @LuciaJadeMain
welcome to the forum :)

as a very short term solution ( days) perhaps a really early test in the morning ( set an alarm for 5am ) , test , and give a small correction

I think you could be experiencing DP ( dawn Phenomenon )

longer term (next few weeks) have a look at basal testing to see that you are on the right dose of long acting
link here https://mysugr.com/basal-rate-testing/

it is frustrating getting these early morning highs but you can solve it

perhaps a change of long acting insulin too...............lantus , levemir , tresiba are all possibilities ( don't know which you are on currently )

There's a possibility that you're actually taking too much long acting insulin, then going low in the night, at which point your liver pumps out sugar to get you back into range...
Any chance your clinic can give you a continuous glucose monitor so you can check out the night time situation? Otherwise... time to set an alarm clock.

I was having a similar problem, and kept increasing my lantus. Eventually my diabetic specialist suggestes that I reduce my lantus and things improved....

Perhaps you just need more basal overnight - and I mean much more than during the day - which is not really possible to do with Lantus (a pump would help with this). Alternatively, you could try to increase the amount of exercise you do - I find that even 15min more per day can really decrease my basal needs. Good luck finding a solution!

I was having problems where I was going low overnight (waking up sweating), but at 6am when the alarm went off I was usually 8-10. My consultant was more worried about the low overnight, so changed my Lantus dose from 10pm to when I wake up.

Taking Lantus in the morning has stopped the overnight lows, but I'm still waking up quite high (7/8 usually), which he's told me not to worry about - just the DP as my body is on a fairly tight routine and is pumping out sugar ready for me to jump out of bed and get on with life (more falling out of bed moaning that its still dark....)

I used to be on Lantus, but it didn't worked well for me (hypos both in the night and in the morning, with higher numbers consistently through daytime… a nightmare!). So I was changed to Tresiba, which is doing a far better job.
So perhaps Tresiba could be worth a try: ask your consultant (mind: I am not a doctor, I am just sharing what is working for me!).
Best wishes
