Hi my name is Claire I have had diabetes for 23 years type 1 at the moment IAm having very high blood reading readings to the point that they are over the what my metre accepts (33.3) recently at GP anid found my kidneys are not working through a blood test and have to go to see a specialist at hospital anybody got any advice for me I am extremely thirsty & so tired. Thanks

if your blood sugar has been this high for some time, it is likely you are producing ketones which at high levels can be extremely dangerous.

If this is the case and you have been unable to lower your bg by taking extra insulin then you should get someone to take you to A&E immediately.

With BGs that high and not coming down, you definately need to be in A&E asap.

My GP knows they are high I have no ketones at all he also told me to stop taking Metformin I am testing my BM every 2hours

I think with levels that high over a prolonged period then you should really go to A&E. You have stated that you feel very tired and thirsty and these are classic signs of high blood glucose. Other symptoms can be :

Decreased consciousness

Difficulty breathing

Fruity breath

Mental stupor

Nausea

Vomiting

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a complication of diabetes that occurs when the body cannot use sugar (glucose) as a fuel source because the body has no insulin or not enough insulin, and fat is used instead. Byproducts of fat breakdown, called ketones, build up in the body. It is extremely serious and requires medical intervention.

With readings that high, i would personally go to A&E or call NHS Direct.

Were your ketones tested through a urine sample? As I know it can take awhile for them to show in urine even if they are present in the blood.

Hi Claire,

I think everyone is going to give you the same advice - get some medical attention. A&E is never ideal but it beats some of the alternatives.

I have been in touch with our local Q Doc and they said continue what I am doing checking BM & ketones and see how things are in the morning And ring back No ketones &bm 27.1 they said stopping Metformin will not be helping increasing lantus to 68 units so see how things go. Thanks for all your advice.
