Why are my bloods always high first thing in morning but ok before my main meal at tea time

It sounds like your basal is either running out or you're not taking enough, what background insulin are you on ? If you're taking one dose then may need splitting, depending on the insulin.

I have had the same issue, ok before teatime, going slightly higher before bed so correcting then, and then my waking test is always high, have just tweaked my background and woken up at 6.4, first time in a while.

There is a reason, it's just figuring it out ;)

I have it too, no matter how good my levels are before bed time i very often wake up high (+200 mg/dl). Generally eating low carb does seem to lower it to better or even perfect results. I even checked it a few times around 4-5 am and my BG was still in the green, hour of two later they shot up. When i sleep in during the weekends it seems to be worse though but i really can't bring myself to waking up around 6.30 in the morning during weekends. A lot seems to effect it like illness, stress, sleeping in or general bad sleeping.

As said though avoid carbs, completely, if possible a few hours before you go to bed. What helped me a bit was injecting my lantus at a later time (10 PM) which is also the last time of the day i check my BG. For me it's about half an hour or hour tops before i go to sleep.

I find if I eat fatty or carby foods after 8 pm I have problems with fasting blood sugar the following morning.
Otherwise it is likely to be your basal rate, I lowered mine a few weeks ago when it -10 degrees all week and got caught out when the relatively warmer weather arrived, which impacted my FBS.

I'm currently experiencing this for the first time! Last couple of days I've reduced my insulin because I was having hypos almost every night. Before I go to bed my levels are perfect! It was 7.7 I've got up about to have breakfast and my levels are now 13.2!

Experiencing it for the first time means you've gone too far with the basal adjustment.

Have you tried adjusting the timing of your basal dose (or even considered split-dosing) to prevent the night hypo's?

Tbh I'm not too sure, due to have a phone call from my diabetes NEEDS nurse today so will ask

I used to experience this issue as well, and I've tried everything to fix it. From increasing/lowering dosages to not eating carbs at night, nothing seemed to work.

Then I discovered that cortisol is highest in the morning (cortisol inhibits the action of insulin) and maybe this was what was raising my blood sugar. After managing stress more efficiently and not eating too close to bedtime, this issue has subsided. My advice is to get a hold on your stress and make sure that your sleep quality (not quantity) is sufficient. I still get the dawn phenomenon effect, although nowhere near as bad. I can wake up at around 6mmol/l and it will slowly creep up, I'm under the assumption this is normal for most people. Hope this helps.

Best of luck to you :)
