Hello, after my last 2 checkups at the doctors he has said my cholesterol levels are slightly high. 5.4 then 5.6
and said to take statin tablets.
I am 31 and been a type 1 for 2 years.
Does anybody have any advice?
I'm a bit reluctant to take these and would like to correct this with out them.

Thank you

Hi. Your total cholesterol reading doesn't mean much and the GP should know this but gets a payment for prescribing statins. What is more useful is your LDL, HDL and Trig numbers and ratios so ask for these. This website and the web has good ratios. Often with a low-carb diet the ratios can be quite good. It's you choice whether you take the statins; Google the web for the never-ending discussion of the Pros and Cons.

Hi Mike,

Exercise is good for lowering cholesterol levels as are foods that contain soluble fibre like oats, maybe ask your Dr if you can have a go at lowering your cholesterol naturally before considering the statin option, but next time you have your bloods checked be sure to ask for a fasting cholesterol check where they do a full lipid breakdown (you have to fast for 10-12 hours before the test).

Good luck.

Thanks for your replies,
I do go to the gym 3/4 times a week bit I will admit I'm on no strict diet, next time I go I will ask for LDL,HDL also fast for the 10 hours but I did fast last time.

Thanks for your advice
