High Fasting Levels.

Any ideas what would cause high fasting levels? I keep getting them. My lowest levels are always two hours after my lunch. I'm trying to low carb as have found carbs, especially bread (even burgen) and potatoes really shoot my levels up. I'm on Gliclazide 120mg with breakfast and evening meal. I also take Ramipril 5mg, for my BP, which i have first thing and Naproxen 250mg, for rhumatoid arthritis, which i take 3 times a day with meals. I've also just been put on a Ventolin inhaler.

BG Levels are usually between 9.5 - 16 fasting, was 12 this am. Post breakfast between 8 - 14, was 18 this morning after trying Bergan bread for first time. Post lunch between 7.4 - 12 and post dinner 8.5 - 16.

More questions...... :)

Do you test immediately on getting up ?
How long after that do you have breakfast ?
Do you do anything between getting up and breakfast ?
Can you give us an example of one days diet menu as it is high throughout the day too ?

Helps us to help you........

I normally test about 30 -45 mins after getting up.
Breakfast is usually 30 mins after testing.
No, i don't normally do anything between getting up and having breakfast apart from taking meds  Usually shower etc after breakfast.

Am waiting to see consultant re high overall readings with a view to starting Byetta or insulin.

Typical days diet
Breakfast - Bacon and egg or a shape zero yogurt and a small piece of cheese.

Mid morning if needed a few nuts or a satsuma or apricot

Lunch - Salad either with makeral, egg, tuna, cheese or cold meat

Dinner - meat and veg ( no spuds), curry with very little rice ( dessertspoon full) fish and salad.
Either a shape zero yogurt or small amount of fruit or nuts if needed. Which is not often.

I drink water, tea with milk no sugar, sugar free squash and occasionally sugar free fizzy drinks.

Was in hospital before Christmas with pneumonia and DKA. I still have elevated CRP bloods ( infection/ immflamation marker) but have had a flare up of my rhumatiod arthritis which may account for this. Drs are saying BG levels may be slightly raised because of this.

HBA1c was done in hospital when i was ill and was 14.7. May have posted elswhere it was higher, got confused! Labs will not process new HBA1C until end of Feb earliest may be end of March.

First thing is you should test immediately you get out of bed.
If you wait for 1 to 1 1/4 hrs before having breakfast then the levels could be on the rise due to the dawn phenomenon effect.

You should test just before your have your meal.

You say you do nothing........do you just sit around ?

Having said all that the Dr's are correct in that because of the infection your levels may be raised, quite a bit in fact not just slightly. So until you are fully recovered the levels may well not be what you want. For now you may have to just accept the higher levels........as I have said before, sometimes Diabetes has to 'take a back seat' until you are better.

Thanks :D

Will now do fasting test as soon as i get up and test just before meals. Yes, i normally just sit around between breakfast and getting up. Havn't been able to exercise much because of breathing/coughing issues and energy levels, also told not to exercise if BG over 13. Am hoping Ventolin will help sort the coughing and BG will go down so i can start exercising properly soon.

The big problem/question seems to be how long we wait for me to be better. The DSN is very keen to get things done now. The Dr seems to want to wait.

How long to wait.........no answer for that. I had anti Cancer treatment over several months. That put my levels all over the places, that effect lasted for months after too. So, it is something that you may have to live with for a while, people on steroids also find that the detrimental effects last for quite some time.

Just do the best you can but eat healthy and try to stay fit. ATB :)
