Hi, I'm a 32 year old slim guy and I think I'm diabetic. I've tested myself a few times and blood sugar has been higher than 11.1 a lot of the times. My sugar always comes back in the 12-13 range after eating chip butties from the chip shop but my doctors tell me sugar is perfect because my fasting glucose is 5.4/5.5. I don't know what to do. I've had these high readings many times after food but my fasting sugar is always normal.

If you're really worried then I'd ask for an hba1c test or glucose telorance test - the first gives a 3 month picture of your blood sugar, the latter gives an idea of how you body deals with a big hit of sugar

Hello Icyblue. I'm definitely diabetic: my fasting levels are often in the fives, but if I had a chip butty I'd probably go off the scale. The NHS diagnosis decision tree that you doctor looks at says that you are diabetic if your fasting levels are around 7; so your doctor has reversed the logic (incorrectly in my view) by saying that if you're in the fives you're not diabetic. I echo the recommendation to get a HbA1c or glucose tolerance test.

How long after that over indulgence did you test your blood? If it is not long after eating then it will be high. You should wait 2hrs after eating the last mouthful before testing.

Your blood sugar should rise after eating and be high between 30 min and 60 mins after a meal. It should then fall to somewhere around the initial level in a healthy person after 120 mins or maybe 150 mins.
