High HbA1C result?

I was diagnosed Type2 last September, and my first HbA1C test was 5.6%. I'm on Metformin, 500mg twice a day. I've just phoned for the result of my second HbA1C test, and it was 133 on the new system, which I believe equates to 14.3%. I take it this is quite high? I've been asked to make an appointment with the GP, but apart from this week, when he's fully booked, he is away until 26th April - will it be ok to wait this long? And what is likely to happen as a result of this new HbA1C result, if anything?
 
A HbA1c of 14+ is very high Sue. That equates to an average BG level of 21.7 mmol/l. :(

I remember some of your earlier posts and you seemed to be doing OK with low/reduced carbs ? That was in the latter part of last year I think...... What has happened to make your readings so high ? With levels like that and the fact that I believe you are already on some dose of Metformin, not sure about other Med's ? I think almost certainly you will either be put on more medication, or even Insulin as it is so high.

Something has to change Sue.....is it diet....is it Med's ? Maybe both......

I've been following the GL diet for some time, and have seriously reduced carbs and almost completely cut out alcohol. I've also lost 2 stones in weight, so it doesn't make any sense to me! I have severe heart failure caused by dilated cardiomyopathy, so I'm on lots of medication for that - diuretics, statins, beta blockers and ace inhibitors.

It might be possible to get an emergency appointment with the GP this week, but I have 2 days of hospital tests for the heart problems, so it would have to work around that. I can only get an emergency appointment by ringing on the day - do you think I should try for that rather than wait for 26th April? I must admit, I'm quite worried about it!

Have you been able to test your blood sugars recently?

If so, have the numbers been consistently high?

I just wonder whether it might be worth double checking with them whether the A1c result was communicated right. It does sound very high.

If they confirm it as being above 100 (mmol/mol), I would be inclined to ask them to fit you in earlier. I would personally be telling them that I was suffering 'extreme anxiety' as a result of the news. I don't mean you should be even more worried Sue, but pointing out to them that you are extremely anxious could perhaps be enough to make them reassess how early you should be seen.

I was recently given the wrong results of an HBA1C over the phone by someone who had not been trained sufficientky . I felt almost suicidal as they were much higher than I expected after having made huge efforts to reduce my levels,
I don't think anyone believed it was important. Its another manifestation of the attitude which dissuades diabetics from testing. They will test and give you the results all in good ime,
In my practice they are unused to diabetics wanting to take responsibikity for heir own health.
 
Phew! I managed to get to see my GP this morning, and the receptionist had got her wires crossed! Some of my results were high due to my meds, but that is to be expected. But my HbA1c was 5.1%, and Cholesterol 3.9, so all good news :D

I've been put on another drug for the heart failure, which is now class 3, but I'm feeling a lot better due to the 2 stone weight loss and other increased meds.
 
Thank goodness for that Sue ! Well done to you with your results. You had us all worried with the numbers in your OP ...... :?
