Hi, yep, test at 3am to check levels. Of still high at 3am then would be safe to increase basal next time. Re check after adjustment in 2 days to see what effect. However, many people do have a drop at 3am, followed by an early morning rise (dawn phenomenon) which is why its important to have a 3am reading before adjusting.

This is the problem on mdi. Test first at 3am. If high (7~8) at 3am increase basal to 9 next time. If 6 or less leave basal at 8. If you do need to adjust basal, adjust Wait 2 days, repeat 3am test.

Should add, increasing night baal will have an effect during day time, so qa may need adjusting after basal changes.

Fully agree with Brett, except 1 small thing!

Don't wait 2 days before repeating the 3am test. DAFNE states that you should always test through the night just to be on the safe side.

On the other hand, if she's going to bed at 7-8, waking up at 8-9 is perfect. If you're concerned I'd be more focused on reducing the pre-bed reading by checking dinner ratios.

Hale I was told not to let her go to bed under 7 ,what should her bloods realistically drop by in the morning?just a few units ?and what is dawn phenomenon ?

Drop by no more than 2 max personally aim to drop no more than 1, giving a margin of error.

Dp (dawn phenomenon) is where the liver dumps sugar in the blood early morning to give the body extra energy to wake. often small increases start as early as 3am continuing to rise till waking. That is why Basal adjustment should not be done by using pre bed and morning readings only. You might see by doing the 3 am test your daughter as low as 5, this happens to many diabetics. but, by starting to rise then showing 7~8 on waking. If thats the case would not increase basal as it may cause a 3am hypo.

Do you have a pen that delivers 1 unit increments or 1/2 units?

Me personally I would ask for a pen that does 1/2 unit increases for a child and adjust by 1/2 a unit.
I think 1 unit will be too much increase..

Thanks Brett that's really helpfull I feel we're understanding the basics now so want to learn more ,not looking forward to getting up at 3 though as working early but hey the joys of being a parent !

Haha. If continues to be a problem some dsns loan a cgm (continuous glucose monitor) for 1~2 weeks for this very reason. Worth an ask maybe.

Have seen that shell, if I remember correctly it tested the little girls temperature which then have then an indication of a problem. You can get them, but not very reliable I've read.
