Hi, I get a steady reading all through the night but when I wake up it always spikes and that’s without eatting or drinking. It then makes it hard to keep it level through the day as I’ve had a bad start. any help would be appreciated

It's dawn phenomenon, or waking rise, or feet on the floor syndrome.

How is your diabetes treated? Pump or MDI? If MDI what basal insulin do you take and when do you take it? If you are on MDI do you bolus to deal with the waking rise? If you're on a pump why isn't your basal rate adjusted to take account of the waking rise?

Usually levemir is used as a basal, or background insulin. Most type1's use novorapid or another fast-acting insulin to bolus when eating. Some of us, like me, take a bolus just for getting up to counteract the 'feet on the floor effect'.

Is it safe to do that? Because i was thinking the same thing but lucky thank to limiting carbs i seldom have fasting bs reading over 7 this few days.

For me, At 4am I have to have an additional 10 unit shot of Insulatard basal plus 0.5 or 1.0 of a bolus to stop me going high prior to 8am. At 8am before getting up I also have to have a whopping 4 units of bolus (without eating) and another 5 unit shot of Insulatard just to cope with rises til midday. I have a large dose of Insulatard at 4am as it kucks in fully from 8-noon when I need it most. The bolus at 4am copes with the rise I get between 4 and 8am.

The 8am shot of bolus is immediately I wake. Then i wait 30 mins before getting up so that it will start to deal with my feet to floor syndrome... the Insulatard at 8am copes with my bloods till midnight.

At 4pm I have just 1 unit of tresiba and this currently keeps me more balanced at nights.

I have quite an extreme regime but if I didnt do this I would be in 20's within 2 hours of getting up.

When first trying this I took some safety measures. I started by seeing what happened when I took 3 units, knowing I need about 7 units for a slice of bread at that time of day. Used up a lot of test strips in a couple of hours and kept a slice of bread and sweets handy in case it wouldn't work out. If you test often enough to see a possible hypo coming before it's there (or use libre/gcm) I don't see how it would be unsafe. Especially as I only need a small amount of carbs to counteract the insulin.
Most of my fasting sugars are below 7 as well, but they will quickly go up should I not get some insulin before getting out of bed.

If you think your levels are rising from DP or waking or Feet on floor therre are different ways to manage..

Some for DP may get a way
With changing doses and times of background insulin.

Dont forget though... do not over do anything... start off minimal. Dont forget any bolus you take will peak in its performance 90+ minutes so you could dramatically go low later..

It is trial and eeror and we are all different. The last my diabetic nuse advised me was to do 10 units of tresiba at 22.00!!' -compare that to what I am doing at 4pm... just 1 unit!!

Please do not rush in with big changes... build up or adjust by small amounts...

You are and slways will be the expert on your body..
