Hi everyone. I am newly diagnosed only 6 weeks ago and after not being able to tolerate Metformin, the GP has put me on Vicoza injections once a day. I have lost 2 stone in weight and my afternoon readings are coming down to 6's and 7's (from an original 12.4) but I am still having highs first thing in the morning upon waking which I can't seem to do anything about. Usually the readings are mid 8's to mid 9's. Any advice please?

Google dawn phenomenon - basically the body releases various hormones ( cortisol, growth hormone and the like) in the early hours of the morning (4am ish) and the liver dumps glucose intonthe blood in respose. Its part of the body getting ready for action and happens in all humans. In non diabetics enough insulin is relesed to mop up the excess glucose but for us diabetics this regulatory system doesnt work. There are ways of eating at night / on waking that some people find helps with DP so that youre not having to play catch up all day

Thanks for that. Don't fancy waking during the night though to eat something but really do want to get these numbers down first thing in the morning. Will do some more research on it to see what can be done. Tis a learning curve, that's for sure!

Those readings in the morning for me were last to come down. Have you had the new member advice from @daisy1 ? This is really helpful and contains details to the Low Carb programme.
