Hi Everyone
It has been a while since I posted but I am having a bad time with my blood glucose levels
which have been hard to control I take 44 units of Humilin 3 on a morning and 30 units before evening meal
my reading are mostly over the 20 + before and after a meal
I try to keep my carbs down and I would say I eat a healthy diet
I am a little over weight but I cannot exercise as I have MS
I am at a loss at what to try my husband called 111 last week because my reading was 28.4 and I was feeling a little unwell
a consultant from the hospital rang me back and said to take 4 more units of insulin and to tell my GP I should be monitored at the hospital from now on. last Wednesday I had to do a water sample.. Thursday GP rang to say it showed really high protein levels and to put in another sample which I did Friday morning... this morning my sample is normal.
I would appreciate any advice and sorry to waffle on a bit but I am bewildered as to why my reading are so high and can the protein vanish so quickly I am 70 yrs old.. type 2 diagnosed 2006 but was glucose impaired for some years before that
Thanks for listening

Hi @shirl1946 I see that you are taking insulin and you state you eat a healthy diet, but do you count how many carbs you eat throughout the day? It doesn't actually sound like your BG is raising after a meal, as it sounds more like it is perpetually high?
For a recent meal can you give an idea of what your blood sugar was before, and after, and what you ate for that meal. Carbohydrates are possibly causing the raised BG, have you worked out how many carbs you eat (and when) throughout the day?

Hi @shirl1946 :)

You say you're on mixed insulin. Do you have prescribed amounts of carbs to have for each meal? When I was first diagnosed, I was initially put on mixed insulin but had to eat a particular amount of carbs to make sure my levels remained in range.

When you're on insulin, you also need to take into account the amount of carbs you're eating and aim to have your insulin to carbs as perefctly matched as possible.

I know you've mentioned keeping your carbs down, but your results suggest you either need less carbs or more insulin. They need to balance, and carb counting is the best way to do that.

As for the protein in your urine, I dont know. But if it was me, I'd want some more follow up checks done to see if everything was ok.

Thanks for your reply my GP rang up today and told me to increase my insulin again by 4 units
It is hard to know what to can eat.. I do check carb levels on all packages but never know if they are right or not
I think I am a bit frustrated at the moment nothing seems to be working in my favour.. its nice to get advice from other sufferers
once again thanks

Thank you for your advice. In my post it said I was diagnosed 2016 it should have been 2006 this 70 yr old must have brain drain I have been on insulin for 2 years now before that was tablets and at one stage I had too tight of a hold so they took me off medication and that when things started to go wrong my Hb1c shot up from 46 to 89 thats when I was put on insulin. I cannot get my old head around carbs I don't eat sweet stuff I have cut right down on potatoes having 4 small new ones I occasionally have pasta
but no rice, have homemade fresh veg soup a lot and sometimes a small bread roll, what is the best book for checking how many carbs are in food.. 3 days last week my fasting bg was 15. and the rest of the day was in the 20s they have been like that for a good while now.. my fasting this morning after more units of insulin was 8.9 so it is coming down and I am grateful for any little improvement..
once again thanks for your reply

@shirl1946 You could ask your GP if there's a diabetes nurse you could speak to, or perhaps a dietician to advise about carbs.

The carb counts on packaged foods are usually ok - just watch out if it's something like pasta to make sure whether it's telling you the amount per uncooked or per cooked weight.

You may find it easier to control your blood sugar if you stick to the same amount of carbs for each meal. Routine is usually helpful too - things like having meals around the same time.

See how your insulin increase works for now, but do ask about what further advice is availanle - as well as looking around this forum too, of course! : D
