high readings in the morning

I've just been put on to a 3rd 500mg glucophage tablet. Since then my daily and evening readings have come down but my morning one doesn't seem to go below 9.5- 8.5 before adding the extra tablet it was usually 7.5 >and I'm eating eating exactly the same for supper. Any ideas?

That fasting reading is high.

I think you need to take a reading just before bedtime and see what that level is. If it is too low, then during the night it can trigger a hefty DP and elevate your Bg level by quite a lot. You need to concentrate on that first. Then hopefully your morning level will be more in the correct range of between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
BTW. When and what was your supper ?

4 small (finn crisp) rye crackers and cheese. Don't have my readings with me as I'm at work but they've been 7-8ish before bed.

I'm not familiar with your brand of crispbread so have no idea of the carb value. When you can let me know what the carb value is of one cracker. Most of the ones I have looked at are extremely high in carbs, which of course will play havoc with your BG levels.

Are you sure about this ? 0.5g carbs ??

On the above you are eating at least 20g of carbs before bedtime and just adding to a slightly high reading before bedtime. That would be a main meal for me ? I think this may be where the problem lies. A decimal point can make a huge difference.

I always have a bit of cheese (approx. 25g) before bed after taking my "night reading". If my reading is below 5.3 I will have both cheese and a square or two of dark chocolate. I have found if I have a night reading of 5.5 - 6.0 and have a little cheese I will wake up with a similar number, but also found that lower than 5.5 I need to eat something with carbs to avoide waking up with figure above 6.0. Funnily enough dark chocolate seems to be the best thing for my night snack if figure is low. E.g. the other evening had a 5.1 night reading. Had 20g of 85% dark chocolate, slept happily for over 8 hours and woke up with a 5.3 reading.

The pattern is the same the other way around - high night reading, I wake up with a high morning reading, I if have my usual slice of cheese. If I have high night reading and don't eat anything, my Bg level will "normal" again in the morning.

Suppose it is all down to trial and error, but this way I can keep my Bg at an even and level keel and rarely have a reading above 7-8, even 1 hour after eating, although it does happens now and again when I am trying to introduce or re-introduce some new foods. Funnily enough I have found that Tomatoes are a complete no no!! Go figure!!

Having had my weight at a standstill for a month (and up when I had a major blow out), it has finally started to move again - want to loose those last few kilos!!
