Hi

I did the Dafne course at the end of last month and as a result my night time levemir injection was moved from doing it before bed to doing it at 7.30pm, as we noticed I was running higher after tea despite carb counting and matching to novorapid correctly. since then my evening readings have improved and for the first week, my readings before bed and in the morning were perfect. However over the last week despite going to bed with levels of 5, I have been waking up higher (sometimes it increases to as high as 13/14) I have added another unit of levemir before bed since Saturday as I thought I may need a higher dose to last the longer time overnight but this morning I woke up at 16 despite being at 5.

I have a sore throat today so wondered if this had caused it or should I increase levemir again before bed? Just a bit confused really and looking for some advice as over the last week, sometimes i have gone to bed in range and woken up in range and other times it has gone higher, despite my food not really changing and doing all the carb counting correctly. it would be easy if there was a constant pattern but there hasn't been and I am very confused!

Thanks for reading!

Sometimes despite doing everything correctly, you can get a few readings that just don't make sense. It could well be that you have a cold or fever coming ( hope not ! ) or it could be a multitude of other things. I would keep doing what you're doing, record all readings and adjust accordingly your basal insulin. Good luck !

May well be a result of you feeling unwell or could be your going hypo in your sleep (google Samoygi Effect). I would do some bg testing for a couple of nights just to get an idea of what your bloods are doing, test 2-3 hourly and if it does start to rise for no apparent reason then increase your dose by 1 unit until things settle down.

I wouldn't make any adjustments without seeing a pattern developing first. Like Noblehead said you're better to test every hour or two during the night to find out what's happening, as if you are going too low at night and getting liver dump then increasing basal further will only make things worse. A real pain having to wake to test but worth it to find out what's going on. Hopefully it's not a bug coming on.

Thanks for the replies. i'm pretty sure it isnt because of going low at night as I usually wake up whenever that happens and I have tested a few times when i have woken up in the night anyway- last week i went to bed 5, was 7.5 at around 4am and went up to 12 by 9am. I will check again a few times this week tho to make sure. It is just a bit odd because it doesn't happen all the time and I thought if it was a cold coming up it woul;d be a constant patter of highs- I will check during the night and record all readings this week and hopefully it will get sorted. Am frustrated as my first week after Dafne went so well but since then it has not despite not changing anything!
